Does Psy Have a Drinking Problem?

by Kate Ward

For once, we're not laughing with or at Korean pop star Psy. Despite finding fame with sunny hits like "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman," it seems the singer is harboring quite the dark side. Speaking with the U.K.'s Sunday Times, Psy hinted at a drinking problem. And by "hinted," we mean essentially confirmed a drinking problem with the most depressing quotes ever spoken by a man who stars in a pistachio ad.

"If I'm happy, I'm drinking, if I'm sad, I'm drinking," Psy told his interviewer. "If it's raining, I'm drinking, if it's sunny I'm drinking. If it's hot, I'm drinking, if it's cold, I'm drinking."

So what's behind Psy's struggles? The singer, who calls Korean vodka both his "best friend" and "vice partner," revealed that his father was abusive — until Psy wrote a song in 2006 about their estranged state. His father then decided to try to work on their relationship, a small victory for a man who had also spent time in prison just five years before for possession. Said Psy, "Spending that kind of period [in jail] is not good, especially as a member of my family ... But as an artist, the more experience, the better the creation. I'm a very positive person. So if shit happens, I think maybe this happens because a huge amount of happiness is coming to me."

Here's hoping Psy finds that happiness without having to drink "whisky, vodka, tequila, whatever."
