Does He Look Like Obama to You?

Does the guy above look like the President of the United States to you? Yeah, that guy right there who is obviously in his 20s and on a soccer field and wearing a jersey. They look the exact same, right? No. No, they do not. But apparently a souvenir company in the U.K. had a hard time telling the two apart because a photo of Barack Obama appears on a World Cup souvenir mug instead of Chris Smalling of England's national team. I don't have any idea how or why this happened, but I'm thinking the responsibility lies on some intern who thought, "Hey, you know what would be funny..."

After receiving the messed up mugs, the Dorset, England based company that ordered them turned to Wholesale Clearance U.K. in hopes that they would resell the mugs. They weren't suitable for stores, after all! (Except they totally were even more suitable for stores, because who wants a mug printed with the photo of a losing soccer team member when you can have an absurd Barack Obama mug?) According to Wholesale Clearance's website, the mistake was likely made by a low level employee at the souvenir company:

They passed this onto to their young, bright eyed and bushy tailed new apprentice. The designs were proofed and signed off by their boss, who had clearly had a heavy night with the lads playing poker and before he'd had his first vat of coffee the following morning. They immediately contacted us and 2,000 of the England items were dispatched to our warehouse. We eagerly unpacked them and, indeed it turned out that the Chris Smalling cup had Barack Obama's head on instead of Chris's.

Even if this was the doing of a "bushy tailed new apprentice," you don't just accidentally Photoshop Barack Obama's head onto Chris Smallings' body. And it isn't like they just typed "Chris Smalling" into Google and happened to get a photo of Obama wearing an England jersey. I think that this was absolutely done as a joke and I've gotta say, if you work as an entry level photo researcher at a souvenir company, sacrificing your job for a prank is probably worth it.

The trick (if it was, in fact, a trick) didn't make it very far though and the mugs didn't end up in stores. Not that this is surprising seeing as the mug HAS BARACK OBAMA'S FACE ON IT and you don't just not recognize the U.S. President.
