If you fly a lot, you’ve probably gotten so accustomed to the safety schpiel flight attendants perform at the beginning of each flight that you either a) space out as soon as it starts, or b) mouth it right along with them. This, however? Would most definitely not be the case if you were on the Southwest Airlines flight departing from San Francisco and landing in Chicago on Tuesday, June 17. I guarantee that you have never seen an in-flight safety demonstration quite like this before.
Seriously, you guys. The only word I can think of that even begins to describe it is “sassy.” And I am not generally a person who uses the word “sassy” on a regular basis. The flight attendant in question, a man with a delightful Southern drawl, begins the whole thing with the seatbelt instructions — noting, of course, the absurdity of needing to tell us how to use our seatbelts in the first place. “Now, in the event that you haven’t been in an automobile since 1960,” he quips, “flight attendants still have to show you how to fasten a seatbelt.” He goes on to specify, “That seatbelt has to be low and fast about your hips, just like the hot pink Speedo I’m going to be wearing when I finally get the three of us to a hotel hot tub tonight.”
See? Sassy!
The jokes continue through the identification of the emergency exits (“Folks, if you don’t like the jokes of the service today, there are six ways out of this airplane; feel free to use them”) all the way to the how-to for inflating your life vest (“It’s a life vest, not a toilet seat cover”). The flight from SF to Chicago is only a little over three hours, but man, I’m sure those three hours were a blast — or at least, as much of a blast as a plane ride can be. According to the video’s descriptions, this lovely gentleman even threw a cocktail party halfway through the flight.
Well played, sir! Well played, indeed! You had absolutely no trouble with your passengers doing any of these in-flight no-nos, am I right? You also definitely showed that nasty pilot with his anti-flight attendant rant just how awesome you and your fellow flight attendants are. Bravo!
