Hanna Needs A New Friend On 'PLL'

by Christine DiStasio

Creepy is as creepy does. On Tuesday night's new episode of ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars , "Surfing the Aftershocks," creepy Mona was in full-effect. And fans learned that she's really always been that creepy — thanks to Hanna's flashbacks. We predicted that Alison's return to Rosewood would be hard on Hanna, but it turns out that it won't be hard in the way we expected. Somewhere along the line, Mona turned Hanna into a mini-Alison and now Hanna's left dealing with some seriously effed-up memories. Is someone going to get rid of Mona already? Please?

If Alison used her powers of friendship to ruin Hanna' self esteem, Mona used hers to manipulate and mold Hanna into the perfect BFF. And after Tuesday night's episode, I really can't tell which is worse because they both seem like the worst friends of all time. In case you forgot, Alison came up with the incredibly cruel pet-name "Hefty Hanna" that stuck with my favorite liar until Mona apparently swooped in to save her. Hanna's "Surfing the Aftershocks" flashbacks showed her pre-slim down character getting taken under Mona's wing, much like Ali took Mona under hers before she left town.

And yes, Mona made Hanna lose the weight, put on some nice clothes, dye her hair, and made her one of the popular girls in school. Which is more than I can say for Alison, who kept her friends at a arm's length from one another and well below her in the social strata of high school. But still, you should want to be friends with someone just to be friends, Mona, not to have a life-sized paper doll.

Between Alison and Mona, Hanna lamented on Tuesday night that she has no idea who she is. Ali verbally and emotionally abused her and Mona helped her to become someone she wasn't. So what will she do now? After getting eerily mistaken for Ali at the Rosewood funeral home, the end of "Surfing the Aftershocks" found Hanna in the hairdresser's chair, getting a new color to set her apart from her formerly dead friend. But it's going to take a lot more than that to save her. Hanna needs to get some new friends and she really needs to get rid of Mona.

Now that PLL fans know how they became friends in the first place, on top of Mona manipulating Hanna as a part of the "A" game, it's definitely time that Hanna kick her to the curb. Because she's not insecure "Hefty Hanna" anymore and it's time to cut loose some of that dead weight hopefully with one of her great one-liners:
