At the 2014 Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Grants Banquet, Kristen Bell, Kerry Washington, and More Battle It Out to Be Queen of Style
As a style writer, it should come as no surprise that I'm pretty opinionated when it comes to fashion (both in terms of mine and others). That means I typically don't have a hard time making up my mind about which stars should make the best-dressed list at a particular event, and which stars should try a little — or a whole, whole lot — harder next time around. Take the 2014 Oscars red carpet, for example: I decided within seconds that Cate Blanchett was divine, while Jennifer Garner left me, well, a little sad. And at the 2014 Met Gala, I had no problem proclaiming that stars like Emmy Rossum, Lily Aldridge, and Karolina Kurkova were to die for, while Katie Holmes's Beauty and the Beast dress just made me die a little inside. (And please, don't get me started on Lupita Nyong'o's confusing flapper number).
But the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Grants Banquet on Thursday was a different case altogether, as A-listers like Kerry Washington and Kristen Bell looked so stunning and chic, it was almost impossible to decide who was the best-dressed star of the evening. Think you could help me out? Just click through to see the looks, then decide which amazing ensemble was your favorite.
Elle Fanning
Balancing out the sexy silhouette with a fun pattern and glittering heels, the young actress looked the perfect amount of grown up in her Vivienne Westwood Gold Label dress.
Kerry Washington
She may not have walked the red carpet, but that didn’t stop the Scandal star’s strapless, boldly printed, and tea-length number from looking any less charming.
Hailee Steinfeld
Simple? Yes. But it certainly doesn’t take away from the chic factor of Steinfeld’s striped fit-and-flare ALC number and cross-strap pumps.
Sofia Vergara
Taking the term “red hot” seriously, Vergara sizzled in her body-hugging, mesh-paneled gown.
Jenny Slate
The funny lady looks perfectly prim and feminine in her subtly dramatic blush number and enviously curled lob.
Abigail Spencer
Spencer pulls off her boy-meets-girl Dolce & Gabbana outfit flawlessly with the help of a great ponytail and killer pair of lace-up heels.
Gina Rodriguez
Rocking a silhouette similar to Steinfeld’s, the actress looked classy (and not one bit boring) in her ladylike dress and multihued heels.
Robert Pattinson
A black suit doesn’t get any hotter. You’re welcome, ladies.
