New Racist Nixon Tapes Revealed

by Gillian White

Yikes. Ready to hear some totally inappropriate and outrageous things former President Richard Nixon had to say about blacks and Jews?

Well, um, you're in luck. On Wednesday, the Nixon Library released the last set of White House tapes from the Nixon years, and the former president really goes to town with the racial and ethnic comments about these two groups.

The latest collection covers April 9 through July 12, 1973 and includes about 340 hours of recorded tape. That's a lot to parse through to get to Nixon's colorful comments. Luckily, the Atlantic has pulled out some of the best bits for all of us to take a look at:

On Jamaicans being able to run their own country:

Blacks can’t run it. Nowhere, and they won’t be able to for a hundred years, and maybe not for a thousand. … Do you know, maybe one black country that’s well run?

While reacting to what he felt was an undermining statement by his aide, Leonard Garment:

Goddamn his Jewish soul!

On what kind of appointees he wants:

No Jews. We are adamant when I say no Jews.

No Jews, no Jews. Right, let me get a pen. The former president's thoughts on black and Jewish people weren't relegated to political dealings. On the tapes the president doesn't hesitate to offer off-the-cuff opinions about the two cultures as well.

While talking to his wife about a garden tour for children Nixon says:

You know it's funny, the little black kids are so uncommunicative, aren't they? Good golly.

God, he would have hated the Obama administration.
