11 Celebrity Couples Accused of Faking It For the Cameras — Was Their Love Real?

Maybe we're all just a little jaded when it comes to Hollywood love, but not every celebrity couple feels totally believable. After all, it's the oldest PR trick in the book: Have two hot stars date one another and watch as their metaphorical fame meter starts to rise. While some of us may have rooted for these couples, not everyone was convinced that they were all real couples to begin with. So what celebrity couples were accused of putting on a show for the paparazzi? Here's who fans called out as phonies... whether they were in love for real or not, we'll never know.

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson

Fans hoped that the stars of the Twilight franchise would become a real life Bella and Edward, and it looked like they got what they wanted when Stewart and Pattinson stepped out together in real life shortly after the first film premiered in 2009. But were they ever actually a couple? We’ll never know for sure but rumors of a “contract relationship” have followed the couple around for years. It does seem a little suspicious that their relationship ended just around the time their alleged contract would have expired…

Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens

SAY IT AIN’T SO! The High School Musical co-stars were the most adorable Disney couple to come out of the early 00s, but a lot of people think that their relationship was a total showmance. This wasn’t the first time Efron was accused of entering a PR-elationship: His alleged romance with Lily Collins was also called out as a sham.

Taylor Swift & Harry Styles

It’s no secret that Swift doesn’t get along with her alleged ex — she’s made several public jabs at the One Direction-er since their alleged breakup in 2012. Her biggest one? The many hints she has made that place Styles as the inspiration behind her song “I Knew You Were Trouble.” The only problem with that is that the song was allegedly written before Swift and Styles ever met!

Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise

There were rumors for years that Holmes was “contracted” to play the part of Cruise’s wife, which was allegedly arranged by the Church of Scientology. The contract theory surfaced again in 2012, when Holmes filed for divorce from her husband five years after their marriage.

Lea Michele & Cory Monteith

A blind gossip item from 2013 accused the Glee stars of faking their relationship for the cameras.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West

Personally, I think that the relationship between Kardashian and West is 100% real — West loves himself way too much to date someone he doesn’t see as worthy. It’s easy to see why people think this relationship (and now marriage) is fake — Kardashian’s celebrity skyrocketed after teaming up with West, and her marriage even scored her the cover of Vogue in April of 2013.

Beyonce & Jay Z

Gossip bloggers have speculated that this power couple isn’t together for love, but instead stick out their marriage to take advantage of the business opportunities (like that On the Run tour). I say… why can’t they be together for both?

Harry Styles & Kendall Jenner

She’s the new It Girl. He’s the new teen dream. Though they only dated for a few weeks, the press was all over this couple… which was probably exactly what they wanted. Come on, you didn’t really think that this relationship was real, did you?

Jennifer Aniston & Vince Vaughn

Aniston had just gone through a divorce from her former husband Brad Pitt when she began promoting her rom-com The Break-Up. Vaughn played her onscreen love interest. The couple allegedly dated during the promotion for the film and called it quits weeks later, causing fans to question whether they were ever a real couple in the first place.

Ryan Seacrest & Julianne Hough

The American Idol host and new So You Think You Can Dance judge dated for over two years before breaking up in 2013, but the rumors that this couple was all for show were there from the beginning. One big red flag? Seacrest bought Hough a $3 million dollar “breakup mansion” after their split.

Brody Jenner & Lauren Conrad

Jenner was a total player on The Hills, but his flirtationship with star Conrad was one of the focal points of the later seasons of the series. Of course, like all things on the show, this relationship was a total sham — Jenner admitted that he never dated Conrad, onscreen or off.
