13 Celebrity Quotes About Working Out from Famous Ladies Who Hate It Just Like You

I don't mean to make myself into the caricature of "the girl that hates working out," but damn do I hate exercise. Yes, I always feel good after I do it, but it's the forcing myself to do it that truly blows. I am lazier than most. I have tons of friends who are constantly posting their #bootygains on Instagram and bragging about new yoga poses and tbh I wish I could join their ranks in enthusiasm. But these celebrities who aren't all about going to the gym make me feel a little bit better about the fact that the main purpose my yoga pants serve is pajamas.

Reese Witherspoon

She doesn’t mind outdoor activities to burn calories, but as far as gyms go, I feel like Reese Witherspoon says what we’re all thinking: ”If I never had to see the inside of a gym again, I’d be a very happy person.” Wouldn’t we all.

Eva Mendes

Mendes likes to walk her pup, which is always a fun way to exercise. But she doesn’t pretend to be a gym-rat: "Although I’m like every other woman and I don't say Yay! I'm gonna be at the gym for two hours, it's still extremely beneficial." I wish it were that easy for me to do hard things that benefit my health… but it's so much easier to order a pizza.

Jennifer Lawrence

J. Law does not even pretend to begrudgingly go to the gym or eat healthy. "Nothing can motivate me [to work out]. Then X-Men started, and I thought, 'Oh definitely, I’ll work out and diet.' But nope." Feeling the realness.

Mary J. Blige

Mary J. Blige expressed all of our wishes when she said, "I wish there was a pill you could take that could do everything that is in that gym.” Despite her dislike, she still pushes herself, which is definitely the hardest, worst, but most rewarding part.

Keira Knightley

The slight, slender Keira Knightley captures that spirit of "I really want to try, but it’s just so hard" when she talks about her experience with attempting to join a gym: "I did hire a personal trainer which was quite good and she sort of cracked a whip and shouted at me a lot and made me do it, but I didn’t really like it. I don’t like pain. And I do find that working out is quite painful. I did actually join a gym, sort of about a year ago, it’s was a really nice, really posh gym and I just go and I sort of watch everybody and they’d be slugging away, and I’d watch them and just think, 'No... I’ll just sit here.'” I will just sit here, too, as I am also not a pain from the gym kind of fan.

Lauren Conrad

Even someone who looks like an Instagram dream like Lauren Conrad can’t maintain her signature optimism when it comes to exercise: "I’m not a huge fan of the gym, to be honest. When I have to go to the gym and put an hour in, I’m just staring at the clock."

Jessica Alba

You wouldn’t think that the star of Honey would work out begrudgingly just like the rest of us, but her struggle is real, too. Jessica Alba told Women’s Health, "Sometimes I do sprint intervals just because I hate working out. Anything where I have to do something but I can get my mind off of doing it, that’s so much better for me than anything that’s repetitive. Or the music has to be loud and I have to be moving." Yes, distraction is the best motivator.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone just gets straight up PISSED about exercise, and I cant relate: "I had a trainer during Spider-Man and I discovered I have deep-seated rage when I’m holding heavy weights over my head. Whatever dormant anger I have in me, that’s where it comes out. That’s not the kind of working out I want to do. I would much rather sleep at night than want to throw a weight across a room at someone. I’m usually a pretty peaceful person, but for some reason when I get in the gym something bubbles up in me… I haven’t worked out for a month and I’m proud of it!" I did not know she had that kind of rage within her.

Sofia Vergara

A cancer survivor, Vergara, who’s been touted as one of the sexiest women in Hollywood, has to keep in shape for her health, but she’s super real about how hard it is: "For me it’s punishment. It’s not like, 'Oh, let me relax and go to the gym.' It’s not my 'me time' or my fun time. No. It’s my torture time. So of course I try to avoid it or make excuses every time. But I do try to do it at least three times a week if I’m not shooting. I wish I loved it. Believe me, I wish." I wish too, girl.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne has to find ways around her disdain for exercise to keep healthy. She says she “hates running” (amen to that), but that her trainer helped her find other ways to run and other ways to keep fit. Compromise!

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore, who is 54 but could put anyone of any age to shame with those gams, is a little cranky about her workouts. "I don’t like noisy workouts. I tried spinning and didn’t like it; it’s just too loud for me." Turn that damn music down!

Blake Lively

Blake Lively’s attitude towards the gym is more or less "eff this noise," but she does other things! "I’ve said before I hate the gym; I eat chocolate; yes, that part is true. But what they don’t print is I hate the gym, so what I do instead is find other ways to be active. I ride bicycles, I hike, I go out and exercise in nature, and I’m active that way." Respect. Nature and chocolate > Treadmill.

Michelle Obama

That’s right y’all, even our flawless FLOTUS who is passionate about health and started the Let’s Move program has issues getting herself to the gym. "I will hate working out and I will be cursing the name of the people who told me to do it. But there will come a time when you have a cardio pop, an epiphany where actually it does feel better." My epiphany is that despite seeming like a goddess, it looks like she has human feelings too.
