You Can Get This Look For Waaaaay Less

by Erin Mayer

In fashion, there's nothing we love more than a good pop culture reference. That's why the Internet is all abuzz over Forever 21's Simpsons-themed collection, which will launch Thursday. The 16-piece line features both men's and women's items printed with characters from the legendary cartoon. And the best part? Everything costs less than $25. You can get that Jeremy Scott circa fall 2012 look for way, way less this season.

According to WWD, the Forever 21 collection is part of "a string of Simpsons-themed fashion collaborations launched by 20th Century Fox Consumer Products to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary." Past labels to get in on the action include Uniqlo, H&M, Topshop/Topman, and even Zara. You might not necessarily think The Simpsons and street style bait go hand-in-hand, but you are sorely mistaken. I can't wait for my favorite bloggers to start parading around in their Bart Simpson crop tops!

And speaking of crop tops, this collection has several. While I'm partial to the "Marge" version, there's is, indeed, a Bart Simpson cropped tank and matching stretchy mini skirt — picture the party girl's version of the co-ord — that bears a striking resemblance to the Jeremy Scott outfit referenced above from his fall 2012 runway. Perhaps too striking a resemblance — Fashionista's Tyler McCall pointed out that the similarities border on copyright infringement due to nearly identical patterns.

When adapting pop culture imagery for fashion, it can be tricky to differentiate. After all, Bart Simpson has only one face. Still, there's a fine line between "knock-off" and "inspired by." As a consumer who probably can't afford Jeremy Scott, I get pretty excited when I see looks that remind me of runway favorites but are within my price range. However, responsible shoppers should steer clear of merchandise that is clearly NOT COOL and try and buy the real thing whenever possible.

That being said, I think you can safely purchase that Bart Simpson body con skirt for $9.99 if it suits your fancy.
