Chobani Yogurt Sickens 89: What Other Foods Are Most Likely to Give you Food Poisoning?

On Tuesday, the FDA revealed that it had received 89 reports of food poisoning courtesy of yogurt brand Chobani.

Consumers had reported nausea and cramps, said a FDA spokesperson, but didn't disclose any more details. Chobani started recalling more than 35 brands of yogurt last week, having discovered that the yogurt had "swelled or bloated" inside the cups. The company announced it had identified the issue — apparently that the yoghurt had come into contact with mold during the manufacturing process — and was still working to recall, or have destroyed, the products that already made it to grocery stores.

Yogurt isn't a typical cause of food poisoning, but faulty production occurs in a wide spectrum of products — hardly any kind of food and drink has no possibility of being contaminated and accidentally released. (You feel better now, right?) Still, there are a few foods that are more likely to turn your stomach than any else. And now, of course, you have to know what they are...

It's A Bad Day To Be Chobani Yoghurt

Watch Out For Meat And Poultry

Meat and poultry account for the highest incidence of food-borne illness — though notorious diseases like foot-and-mouth are, at present, pretty rare.

Not cooking your meat all the way through can be very risky. A father in England was left paralyzed after eating an undercooked pork chop, and doctors told him he was lucky to be alive. And consumers are warned to be skeptical of ground beef, after a woman came down with E. coli and was left paralyzed after eating a hamburger.

Leafy Greens Have Hidden Dangers

There's nothing scary about healthy, natural vegetables, right? Uh, no. Leafy greens have the highest incidence of contamination of any other food, bar meat. A quarter of non-meat food poisoning incidents are caused by bad greens.

So, what exactly goes wrong? Vegetables can run into bad contact with animals, contaminated water, poor handling practices, and even contaminated washing equipment. But keep eating them, because your mom said so.

Bad Eggs

Eggs come in a close second place to leafy greens, even though they're about the most natural things you can eat (just don't think too hard about exactly what they are).

Half of egg-related illnesses are prompted by eating in restaurants. And most are caused by salmonella poisoning in the mother hen, which can usually be erased by thoroughly cooking an egg. Sometimes, though, mishandling of the egg can cause illness as well.
