Shondaland on Why You Should Watch Obama's Speech

by Alyse Whitney

Tonight, President Obama will give a primetime address about immigration, but most people won't even know it's happening. As he explains the executive actions he plans for immigration reform, the top network TV shows will be airing on ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS — like Sons of Anarchy and True Detective, Obama will only be on cable. This is an important speech that has been a long time coming, with people around the world looking for answers. However, with a slew of amazing shows on tonight, the enraged outcry from fans who can't watch their favorite programs could outnumber them.

Although I am 100 percent a loyal Shondaland viewer, I also have a DVR. The winter finales of Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder are all on tonight, but is it more important to be informed on what the president is saying or what the fictional president and his on-again, off-again mistress are doing this week? That may be a Sophie's Choice for some loyal fans, but let's be honest: there is a right answer between those two options. Instead of telling you why you should DVR your #TGIT fix, I'll just hand it over to Shonda Rhimes' characters to explain.

If you do this, you'll feel better about yourself

This is the informed, smart thing to do. You can do this.

You're not a bad person for doing it

No one is judging you. Bailey would probably applaud you for your choice.

Fitz will forgive you for skipping Scandal

He's the president. He gets it.

And they all love you, so they'll understand

Be free of #TGIT for just one night.

Let's be honest: you probably have a lot of questions

Do you really know what's happening with immigration right now?

You don't want to be clueless forever

It's important to keep up with the news, too.

And what if it comes up in an important situation?

Someone could bring up the news while you're trying to impress your boyfriend's parents at Thanksgiving, during a job interview, or something else... you never know.

Remember that this is what DVRs were invented for

You may even be able to catch HTGAWM live, since the speech starts at 8 p.m. ET. But you can watch them all before you go to bed if you're a night owl or catch them tomorrow with a glass of wine in your hand.

OK, so you're ready for the speech now?

You get the trophy this week.
