17 Celebrities You Forgot Had Accents
Ah, to live in an American bubble and to think that all celebrities have flat American accents. This, of course, is patently untrue, and yet I'm still always so surprised when I hear an actor or celebrity speak In real life and not on the screen to hear a wonderful diversity of worlds. American accents are boring! Here are 17 stars who have tricked us all into thinking they're from the good ol' US of A.
Rihanna
Even though I always KNOW in the back of mind that RiRi is from Barbados, I’m still always pleasantly surprised to hear her sultry voice. The Rihanna Navy is here for that Barbadian accent.
Christian Bale
Mind = blown. Batman is actually a Brit. Who knew?
Hugh Laurie
The doctor is IN. Hugh Laurie does such a meticulous and magical American accent as Dr. House, you almost forget he’s British (unless you love A Bit of Fry and Laurie , like I do).
Rose Byrne
Beautiful Bridesmaids actor and soon-to-be Broadway star Rose Byrne does an excellent American accent, but she actually hails from down under in Australia.
Catherine Zeta-Jones
One of the most intriguing of unexpected celebrity accents is Catherine Zeta-Jones graceful Welsh lilt. Suits her grace and glamour perfectly.
Gerard Butler
Stupidly, ruggedly handsome Gerard Butler had a vague British accent in 300 (as all characters in historical epics, sigh), but IRL he’s got a strong Scottish one.
Damien Lewis
That’s right, everyone, Homeland’s original soldier turned terrorist turned Claire Danes lover Agent Brody is not American after all. Damien Lewis is British through and through!
Eric Bana
Bana of chiseled jaw seems wholly American in films like The Time Traveler’s Wife, but this dude is SUPER Australian. He was even the star of a comedy series in Australia, Full Frontal.
Charli XCX
This fierce little “Boom Clap” singer is taking America by storm, but she really hails from England.
Henry Cavill
Our newest, superest of men, Henry Cavill, is BRITISH! Looks like Clark Kent has more than one secret identity.
Andrew Garfield
Speaking of superheroes, Spiderman Andrew Garfield (and lucky boyfriend of Emma Stone) is also from England. Looks like all our superheroes are un-American.
Idris Elba
Elba’s run on The Wire as Stringer might make you think he’s American through and through, but he’s British, too.
Ed Westwick
I’M CHUCK BASS AND I’M BRITISH.
Toni Collette
Toni Collette made her way into our hearts as a brilliant American mother figure in Little Miss Sunshine and The Sixth Sense, but she’s actually from Australia!
Sam Claflin
Resident hottie of The Hunger Games Finnick Odair is American, but Sam Claflin is decidedly British. Still sexy either way.
Daniel Day Lewis
Master of accents Daniel Day Lewis is British at heart, even though he’s created masterpieces like Lincoln’s accent and the terrifying Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. He’s a crazy genius.
