Selena Gomez Gets Emotional on Stage

by Maitri Suhas

Just a few weeks after Selena Gomez released "The Heart Wants What it Wants," an uncharacteristically emotional song rumored to be about her tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber, the singer followed it up with the release of "Do It," which is about, well, doing it. Selena Gomez's performance at the American Music Awards on Sunday night was, to our delight, a soulful, beautiful rendition of the intensely personal "Heart Wants." It was an expected but great choice from the 22-year-old star who's apparently been on a roller-coaster of emotions recently.

Gomez is a welcome addition in the long line of ladies that rule the AMAs stage this year, including Iggy Azalea and Lorde. Even though Gomez seemed hella heartbroken in the "Heart Wants What it Wants" video, she seemed more powerful on the AMA stage. With a moody backdrop of tumultuous stormy grey and black clouds and exploding red flowers, Gomez's performance was super dramatic. But that's what made it so good! She wore a floor-length nude dress probably tying into that whole Being Vulnerable thing, and it was a cool, brave performance. We might think her on-again-off-again relationship with Bieber is super unhealthy (I am one of those who does), it doesn't mean that Gomez isn't amazingly talented. Let's just put one thing to bed: she thrives without him, no matter what. Hard to believe Gomez's AMAs performance, with all its dark moodiness, came from the same little girl on Wizards of Waverly Place .

Even though the visuals may have been a little cheesy, Gomez's performance was so sincere; her voice broke several times and she even started crying in front of the huge audience. Maybe the most shocking part of the performance were the silhouettes of what seemed to be Justin Bieber. That's gonna cause some talk. Gomez was truly inspiring, though, and it was heartbreaking to see Lorde and Taylor Swift tearing up in the audience.
