6 Surprisingly Good Songs from... Lindsay Lohan?!

by Alex Kritselis

Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of Lindsay Lohan's debut album, Speak . Yes, it's hard to believe, but Lohan officially began her short-lived and much-maligned stint as a singer 10 years ago, on Dec. 7, 2004. If you'll remember, Lilo was at the top of her game in 2004 — the movie Mean Girls made her a household name. At the time, a foray into the world of pop music probably just seemed like the next logical step in her still-blossoming career. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at things), Lohan only managed to release one album after Speak: 2005's A Little More Personal (Raw) . Neither LP was a commercial or critical success; neither launched any major hit singles. Bummer.

Lohan caught a lot of flack for her music (Slant's Sal Cinquemani called Speak a "giant market researched disaster," for example), but she crafted both of her albums with some seriously talented (and in a couple of cases, Grammy Award–winning or Grammy Award–nominated) songwriters and producers, like John Shanks (Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette), Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry), Kristian Lundin (Britney Spears), Kara DioGuardi (Kelly Clarkson), Savan Kotecha (Ariana Grande), and Carl Falk (One Direction, Nicki Minaj). If you take the time to sift through Lohan's brief discography, you might end up being pleasantly surprised. If you ask me, she's actually recorded a number of decent-to-good teen-pop tracks. Who knew?

So, in honor of the 10th anniversary of Speak, let's take a look at the six best songs from Lindsay Lohan's music career:

#6. "First"

"First" was featured on the Herbie: Fully Loaded soundtrack. I dig it.

#5. "Symptoms of You"

I live for the "la la la, la la la, la la laaa" bit at the very end of "Symptoms of You." Sometimes I just replay that part over and over again.

#4. "Rumors"

I'm not afraid to admit that "Rumors" is a guilty pleasure of mine. C'mon, I know you know all of the words, too!

#3. "Over"

What a chorus. It's also worth nothing that "Over" is Lohan's biggest hit... so far. She reportedly threatened to resurrect her music career last year, so there's really no telling what the future holds!

#2. "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)"

It's easy to poke fun at the over-the-top "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)" — after all, the music video is a lot — but the song's lyrics are actually kind of devastating when you consider that they're (probably) autobiographical (Lohan co-wrote the track). The chorus is pretty epic, too.

#1. "Black Hole"

Rumor has it music mogul Clive Davis wanted Kelly Clarkson to record a cover of "Black Hole" for her 2007 album, My December, in order to make it more commercial. Clarkson turned him down, but I kind of wish that she hadn't! Her voice would've sounded so fantastic on the emotional track, and I think that she could've made it a hit.
