'Mockingjay' Is On Track to Break a Huge Record

by Emma Goddard

Katniss Everdeen — and Jennifer Lawrence, for that matter — already won over the hearts of Americans during the first two installments of The Hunger Games film franchise, so it comes as no surprise that the character's box office winning streak has just continued into 2014 with the successful release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. It's a beloved franchise, so it's no surprise it's doing well in theaters (with a projected total of $259 million earned at the box office so far) — but, this is still a huge honor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been doing so well, in fact, that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will likely become the No. 2 film of 2014 thanks to high ticket sales.

In other words, if Mockingjay continues to be successful in the box office, it’ll move past the current second place-holder for top 2014 films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This will put the movie right behind Guardians of the Galaxy, which holds first place after having earned a total of $332 million in North America.

Mockingjay is predicted to take home around $23 million domestically this weekend, which is double the amount that its competitor, Penguins of Madagascar, is projected to earn. Although The Hunger Games: Catching Fire grossed a whopping $440 million last year, a number that Mockingjay is unlikely to reach at this point, it’s quite apparent that there are still plenty of Hunger Games fans out there — and nabbing the no. 2 spot for top film of the year? Not too shabby at all.
