If I wasn't under five feet tall and deathly afraid of walking on stage wearing high heels and underwear in front of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of strangers, my life goal would totally be to become a Victoria's Secret Angel. They're basically living the dream life — cushy private plane rides, trips to London to film one of the biggest TV events of the year, and, I'm assuming, all the VS gear they can carry. But if you're under the impression that being an Angel is all fun and games, think again. As far as I can tell, it's actually a ton of work, and that's after you've actually been welcomed into the club. The hardest part? Becoming a Victoria's Secret Angel in the first place.
First of all, you have to remember that your odds aren't great. While in the past as many as 30 women have walked in the fashion show, this year, there are only eight Angels, and most of them have been with the brand long enough that they're recognizable. It's also rare that anyone who isn't represented by a modeling agency (my research indicates being represented by Ford models ups your chances) would be selected as an Angel, as Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek (who's the man to know if you want to walk in the show) mentioned when he spoke to NDTV.
In fact, according to Razek, when models do audition to become Angels, they're given about 120 seconds to show their stuff, and then... that's it. Considering the fact that being an Angel is, for many models, a major lifelong goal, that's hardly enough time compared to what they've sacrificed to even make it to that audition.
"What people don't realize is that they're rarer by far than superstar athletes," Razek said." The numbers of people who can do this are probably under 100 in the world."
If that's not intimidating, I don't know what is.
And it's not just about having the right look, either. Those in the VS know speculate that there's possibly a morality clause that comes with becoming an Angel, social media included. If you aren't ready to portray the fit girl lifestyle, while still remaining totally human and approachable, your chances are basically reduced to zero.
Still want to become an Angel? Get signed by a major modeling agency and get ready to impress the hell out of Ed Razek. Then hope and pray.
