The Wings Left Their Mark at the VS Fashion Show

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is a parade of gorgeous women, lavish lingerie, and glitter — oh, so much glitter. But although the bras and panties are the things we non-models can actually buy in stores — the standout fashion piece of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show are the angel wings. The 2014 show that CBS aired on Dec. 9 had a plethora of fabulous wings on display (as always). Of course, we may never get our own wings (don't worry, you can still recreate the fashion show looks), so we must live vicariously through the models.

There were 39 pairs of wings on display in the 2014 show, but I'm more fascinated by how much they must weigh. (The models workout hard to wear those wings.) And the show stated that it takes the full year to get the clothes ready for the show — so creating the wings is no simple task.

Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima shared with Buzzfeed that, "During fittings, we fight over who gets the biggest wings." And why wouldn't they? The models should all want to have the best wings and show off their plumage — like peacocks (just ignore the fact that those are the male peacock's with the beautiful feathers).

So, let's take a look at the best wings of the evening for the 2014 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Fairy Tale Wings

Hozier performed "Take Me To Church" during the "Fairy Tale" section of the fashion show. The theme was a like a sexy A Midsummer's Night Dream — slightly dark with white trees decorating the stage. Maybe Victoria's Secret was subliminally inspired by the upcoming Into the Woods film? (A musical theater nerd can dream, can't she?) Yet, the models were still girly with glitter, petals, and wings in colors of pink and sea foam green. It's the epitome of what you think about when a fairytale forest comes to mind — with like 90% less clothes.

As Taylor Swift sang "Style" the models showed off classic black and white fashion in the closing segment, "Angel Ball." Although black and white is always a classic, it had almost a masculine feel with the angular shapes and chess piece-like images projecting behind the models. I by all means love black, lacy lingerie (how can you not?), but the hard-looking, abstract wings weren't my favorite.

The "Dream Girl" section was runner-up for the best wings of the night. Another Swift-accompanied set, Victoria's Secret describes the style of "Dream Girl" as "playful looks and push-up silhouettes—all in a powder-puff palette," which is super accurate. The models looked like sexy, eloquent butterflies (never thought I'd use those words in a sentence together either). And pinks ruled the section with bubbles in the background as Swift sang "Blank Space."

The best wings of the night have to go to the first segment — "Gilded Angels." I'm a total sucker for metallics — and gold in particular. But this is the look that we've come to know and love from Victoria's Secret. Extravagant gold wings and accessories, plus some of the most adorable bras and underwear. I mean, gold is the color of angel halos after all.
