How Many SAG Awards Does Benedict Have?

by Arielle Dachille

Let the Cumberbatch-lovers of the world rejoice! Your boy is up for multiple Screen Actor's Guild awards! The 2014 SAG Award nominees were announced on Wednesday morning, and Benedict Cumberbatch received not one, but TWO nominations. DAMN! So how many SAG awards does Benedict Cumberbatch have already? If there was a category for "Outstanding Performance by a British Cutie Pie in my Wildest Fantasies," he'd be sitting on a MOUNTAIN of trophies by now.

His performance in The Imitation Game has earned him a nomination for "Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Lead Role." He's also included in the nod that the Imitation Game received for "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture." Additionally, his portrayal of the titular character in Sherlock has put him in the running for "Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie." YASS!!

This year's nomination for Sherlock marks the first time that this iconic role has earned Cumberbatch recognition at the SAGs. I know, right?! SHOCKING! Especially given that Sherlock has landed Cumberbatch a sea of nominations, which include: two BAFTA award nominations for "Best Leading Actor" in 2011 and 2012, a Golden Globe nod for "Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film" in 2013, and an Emmy Nomination for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie" in 2012. He went on to win the Emmy for Sherlock in 2014 and justice was served. Unfortunately, he wasn't around to accept the award, so Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey did it for him.

Some other wins for Sherlock include: a 2012 Television Critics Choice Award for "Best Movie/ Miniseries Actor," a National Television Award for "Best TV Detective" in 2014, and a Satellite Award for "Best Actor - Miniseries or Television Film" in 2012. Interesting... All these accolades and no SAG award nominations? How do I make sense of this conundrum?

Don't fret. Just because Cumberbatch hasn't gotten a SAG nod for Sherlock until this year doesn't mean he hasn't had any SAG nominations. In fact, he was nominated twice last year within ensemble casts. 12 years a Slave and August: Osage County, two films in which Cumberbatch was featured, were both nominated for 2013 awards for "Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture." So that's two collective nominations for SAGs, and no wins to date for Mr. Benny. (This is what I call him in my head. Just go with it.)

That's what makes this year even more exciting for the Bennz! He's finally getting some individual recognition from this crowd. It's about gosh-darn time.
