Obama’s Tan Suit, And 4 More Goofy Moments From The POTUS In 2014

What a whirlwind of a year it's been. Among others, Ferguson, ISIS, Ebola, and the midterm elections have shook us up in different ways, so much so that I almost feel like Billy Joel could come up with a 2014 version of "We Didn't Start The Fire." But if you thought you had it bad, well, the Leader of the Free World must have been going nuts, having to personally address these issues on top of behaving presidential at all times — God knows sometimes Obama just wants to kick back and relax.

This year, Obama did some less-than-presidential things that made us giggle and sigh in relief that he, too, is human. So while he deserves kudos for powering through another year in what must be the toughest job in the world, let's take a look at his — for lack of a better word — goofier moments in 2014.

The Tan Suit

While it’s usually the First Lady whose fashion moments are attention-worthy — Obama has said he only wears blue or grey suits — the president uncharacteristically donned a tan suit in a press conference in August, to equal delight and derision, and naturally, sent the Internet into a frenzy.

Personally, I say good on you, Obama, for making accidental strong fashion statements!

Speaking Chinese

While visiting China in November, Obama and his Chinese counterpart, Xi JinPing, announced a historic climate deal between the two countries at an economic summit. Obama attempted to speak Chinese as he bade top officials “xie xie,” or goodbye, after a meeting. Although it might not actually count as speaking the language, his rudimentary Chinese-speaking abilities are giggle-worthy in itself.

Side note: the economic summit is the very event where President Putin’s chivalrous gesture of draping a coat over the Xi’s wife was widely covered by the press — and subsequently censored in China.

Being A Dad

Sasha and Malia, the First Daughters, were unjustly criticized by one GOP aide, Elizabeth Lauten, for looking less-than-stellar during the annual bizarre turkey pardoning. Now, Obama isn’t the world’s funniest person, so their bored expressions were nothing out of the ordinary for teenagers who’ve heard their dad’s humor one too many times.

Lauten took to social media to tell the girls to “show a little class,” and to “dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.” She later resigned.

But the point is — Obama is a dad, and dad jokes can be so not funny.

That Latte Salute

One fine September day, Obama exited his helicopter, Marine One, and saluted the Marines at the bottom of the stairs with the hand gripping a to-go latte cup, causing an outrage among veterans and Fox News, who asininely used the incident to further promote anti-Obama rhetoric. Jon Stewart then blasted the “news” channel, saying, “You don’t really care about this. You have no principle about this. You’re just trying to score points in a game that no one else is playing.”

"Emperor" Obama on Late-Night TV

The president took over Stephen Colbert’s job — and alter-ego personality — in early December on the Colbert Report, making fun of both the host and himself.

Obama referred to himself in the third person throughout, and Colbert later asked, ”You realize you’re an emperor now; it has been declared. You are Barackus Maximus I. Why did you burn the Constitution and become an emperor?”
