What if I told you something is happening tomorrow that will never, ever happen again in your whole life? Pretty crazy thought, right? But it's true. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, otherwise known as 12/13/14, is the last sequential date we will see for the next 88 years. Meaning, unless you're younger than 20 and are healthy enough to live well beyond average life expectancy, this is it. No more sequential date partying for you.
So what's going on this Saturday? A whole lot of weddings. Despite being in the middle of frigid December, over 13,000 weddings are scheduled for Dec. 13, which is an over 50 percent jump from the same date last year. Coincidence? Definitely not. Numerically sequential days are very popular for weddings because of the practice of numerology — and the fact that your spouse will never have an excuse to forget your wedding date. Two birds, one stone, boom.
Figuratively speaking, the next visibly sequential date will occur twenty years from now on 1/2/34, but it's not the real deal. So if you're looking to cash in big time on numerological juju, you better get to City Hall, grab that lotto ticket, or ask for the raise pronto.
Last year, for 11/12/13, we interviewed adorable Californian math teacher Ron Gordon, who has a real enthusiasm for sequential days and other date-based anomalies. In the interview, Gordon told Bustle he believes sequential days should be called “Tic Tac Toe Days," because the days are “three in a row." Sounds like a pretty good argument to me.
The math teacher set up his own website themed around the day, and is even holding a competition on his site with a cash prize of — you guessed it — $1,213.14.
He also wrote a poem about it, because why the heck not?
A tribute to Tic Tac Toe
three consecutive numbers will tell the dateTic Tac Toe? we just can’t waitwow, what a sequence, it’s three in a rowhurry, hurry, tell the news to all you know!
If you are looking for ways to get jazzed up about Tic Tac Toe Day, I've come up with a few ideas on how to celebrate. If you're looking to play it safe, you could get some friends together and play a few rousing matches of tic tac toe, followed by ordering pizza and binge-watching Netflix because that's how most 20-something gathering end anyway.
But if that isn't EXTREME enough for you, you could:
- (If you're of legal drinking age and have no fear of death) try taking 12 shots in 13 places over 14 hours.
- Pet 12 cats in 13 states over 14 days
- Buy 12 donuts for 13 people and allow 14 seconds for two of them to fight over the last one
- Buy three pigs, number them 11, 12, and 14, release them in a mall and watch security completely lose their minds
Or just look at the calendar, smile, and go about your day as scheduled.
