'Colbert Report's Successor Has Its First Promo

by Alanna Bennett

At the end of this week The Colbert Report will says its final goodbye. That will be a sad, sad day for television, and for all who loved the Stephen Colbert character in all his truthiness. But we also get something cool out of the deal: Come January 19, The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore will fill Colbert's old time slot. And if the first promo is any indication, it's gonna be great.

The promo basically has Wilmore, who's long been a correspondent on The Daily Show, butting in on people's meals at a diner and explaining what his show has to offer. "It's about giving a voice to the underrepresented, to the underdog," he says. "We get to talk about the real issues, and we get to do it every night."

We've got a sad month-long gap between when Colbert Report leaves us and The Nightly Show enters, but this first promo is soothing some of my sadness that Colbert is ending. And hey, that's still not as monstrous a gap as the one between when Colbert Report ends in December and when Colbert takes over David Letterman's Late Show seat sometime in late summer. This wait is, in comparison, extremely manageable.
