The 12 Days of Spicemas

by Kristie Rohwedder

While poking around the Internet for the audio of the Spice Girls version of The Waitresses’ hit holiday song “Christmas Wrapping", one of the videos nestled in the YouTube sidebar caught my attention. It was a Spice Girls video. And not just any Spice Girls video, but a Spice girls video I hadn't seen before. I had to put the video in my eyes immediately, natch. (I wouldn't say it's my life goal to watch every Spice Girls video on the Internet, but it's not not something I'd like to accomplish.) The video is of the pop group performing a Christmas song medley at Earls Court back in December of 1999. Be still my heart.

The Spice Girls didn't stick with classic tunes like "Jingle Bells" or "Silent Night", mind you. Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Victoria Beckham, and Emma Bunton (yes, this was post-Geri Halliwell's departure) got glam rock with it: The quartet covered “Merry Xmas Everybody” by Slade and “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day” by Wizzard.

The video inspired me to write a little poem. The poem is called "The 12 Days of Spicemas". I will share the poem with you now.

On the first day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Baby Spice's announcement that it's Karaoke Spice time.

On the second day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Scary Spice yelling “LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOO” at the crowd. What a terrific hypewoman she is.

On the third day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Posh Spice’s sassy haircut.

On the fourth day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Sporty Spice kick-hopping around the stage.

On the fifth day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Posh Spice’s claw hand.

On the sixth day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Sporty Spice oh-so lightly stepping on a pedal to release an underwhelming amount of confetti.

On the seventh day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Baby Spice's weird point 'n' shimmy move.

On the eighth day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Sporty Spice slithering around on the stage like a Sporty Snake.

On the ninth day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Sporty Spice lying down on the stage and kicking her feet in the air.

On the tenth day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Scary Spice making up the “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” lyrics as she goes.

On the eleventh day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Scary Spice booking it down a ramp so she can get in on a group hug.

On the twelfth day of Spicemas, the Spice Girls gave to me...

...Sporty Spice lying on the ground again. This time, she's in the fetal position and crying about not wanting to leave the concert. The audience is right there with you, Mel C.

Merry Spicemas to all, and to all a good night!
