Diamond Contact Lenses Now Exist

by Erin Mayer

One of my best friends from college sometimes wears these amazing bright blue contact lenses that make her eyes appear to be a cool aqua color. It's definitely a funky look, but colored lenses have nothing on these diamond contact lenses. Yup, those are contacts with actual diamonds in them. Like expensive jewelry for your retinas.

According to TODAY, the lenses were created by Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan, who was inspired by his wife's diamond-studded teeth, and Sanjay Shah. The resulting line of "eye jewelry" is available now at Shekhar Eye Research Center. Customers pay $15,000 for a set of gold-plated contact lenses adorned with 18 diamonds each.

“I got mixed responses — some said its looks scary, but most of the people loved it,” Chawan told TODAY. "Bollywood personalities loved the concept, that it’s going to be ‘in thing’ in fashion soon. Look at Lady Gaga and her followers. People take time to digest [new fashion], until some celebrity starts using it.”

I'm definitely of the opinion that these are terrifying. They make the wearer look as though they've been possessed by a hell demon that may or may not eat your soul depending on how hungry they are that day. Case in point:

Plus, I'm not sure putting potentially sharp gemstones on your eyeballs is the best course of action. Although Chawan claims they're 100 percent safe (but come on, that's what he's supposed to say), some experts disagree. Like Dr. Dr. Rajesh Khanna, a cornea and refractive surgeon, who told TODAY:

"We should not introduce harmful foreign objects, however shiny they may be, into our eyes." PREACH.
