The Top Style Moments From The 'Whitney' Biopic

by Rikki Byrd

Lifetime's " Whitney " biopic directed by Angela Bassett premiered last night and was met with about as much anticipation and praise as it was accused of contempt and frustration. Twitter weighed in, offering laughs and memes that are sure to circulate throughout the new year; and Whitney Houston's estate released what's most likely going to be 2015's most noted shade, as they wrote of their adamant disapproval of the film. Whether you loved it or hated it, one thing that viewers couldn't discredit is Whitney's style, which thrust everyone into a Google frenzy, matching the real-life style of the award-winning songstress to the Whitney in the film, played by Yaya Dacosta.

Perhaps one unintentional realization in last night's depiction of Houston, who died in 2012, was that the singer and actress was one of the most uncelebrated style icons. Not only were her hairstyles continuously in rotation, but so were her outfit changes from award shows to shopping sprees. And, though she and husband, Bobby Brown, had their highs and lows, he often complemented her style — matching attires and all.

As fashion often recycles itself, it appears to be perfect timing for all of the style moments featured in the film. The resurgence of mom jeans and overalls shows that we are slowly being ushered from our rebirth of 80s style right into the 90s (but somehow finding a way to make our outfits coexist in two centuries, because, fashion). So, as we add all of our favorite Whitney Houston tunes, which we haven't thought to listen to since our mom's actually wore their mom jeans, to our playlists, it wouldn't hurt to throw in an outfit inspired by her, as well.
