Is 'Don Jon' Racist?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's first directorial project, Don Jon, premiered in theaters on Friday. The film features JGL as a Jersey Shore-type dude who is known as a modern day Don Juan, "scoring tens" with his smooth moves and slicked back hair. But he still feels unfulfilled, and also, he's addicted to porn. He meets Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) in a club, and falls for her, and finds out what true love is. Pretty straightforward and it's getting some decent reviews.

Except from the Italian American One Voice Coalition, which is calling the movie racist. Oh boy, here we go.

Apparently the group (which also protested the Jersey Shore) thinks that JGL's film unfairly portrays Italian-Americans and Jewish people.

I haven't seen Don Jon, and yeah, from the previews, it looks like a Jersey Shore/Real Housewives of New Jersey mashup. But that doesn't mean it's racist — sure, it may not make Italian Americans look amazing, but a not so flattering portrait does NOT equal racism.

The Italian American One Voice coalition has also spoken out against The Sopranos, Robert De Niro, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and Bob the Builder, among numerous other entertainment entities.

That's right — Bob the Builder is apparently racist, too.
