ISIS Hostage Crisis Is "Deadlocked"

Negotiations for the safe release of a Jordanian pilot and a Japanese journalist captured by ISIS have come to a standstill, according to Japanese government officials. The deadlines to save both of those hostages have passed, leaving the fates of freelance journalist Kenji Goto and pilot Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh unknown. ISIS militants have said earlier this week that they would execute Goto and al-Kaseasbeh if the terrorist group did not receive attempted suicide bomber Sajida al-Rishawi in return.

Japan's deputy foreign minister, Yasuhide Nakayama, told reporters late on Friday that negotiations between Japan and the Islamic militants have reached an impasse. He said the government remains "on the alert" as officials work to free Goto, who was seized by ISIS last fall. "The deadline has passed, and it is a reality that several hours have passed since then," Nakayama told reporters. "We are doing our utmost to gain more information."
