Aimee Song, of Song of Style, is one of those particularly modern celebrities: An icon with two million Instagram followers whose name means nothing to, say, my grandparents, but everything to a huge community of people that love fashion, interior design, and the internet. For work, she tends to focus on fashion and interior design, and Aimee Song's beauty routine is generally made up of tried-and-true look of natural makeup and gently waved hair. So when I met her in person at this year's Create + Cultivate conference, I wanted to find out a little bit more about her beauty routine. Like, does one of the biggest bloggers in the world have a skincare vice? Does she use DIY face masks like the rest of us? Here's what I learned. (PS: Her skin really is that flawless.)
1. Blog beauty is IRL beauty
My blog is real life. Everything is real life. I don’t shoot multiple outfits in one day. The only times I ever do things differently is if I have a shoot with a magazine or brand or something — for those, I plan the outfits and do heavier makeup. [For my blog,] sometimes I don’t even wear makeup so I’ll wear sunglasses, but I always, always, always have my eyebrows drawn in.
2. She arrived late to the eyebrow game
About a year and a half ago, I realized it a little too late: Eyebrows are everything. Before that, I didn’t know that eyebrows mattered so much, and if I look at old photos, I’m like, Oh my gosh, I look so different — and the only thing that’s different is my eyebrows.
3. White eyeshadow will never be her thing
I noticed that I don’t look good with light eyeshadow around my eyes. A lot of people use white shadow or something shimmery to make their eyes pop. I don’t look good in it; I look like a prostitute.
4. No but seriously, she's obsessed with eyebrows
Eyebrows literally make all the difference. I really didn’t know they made such a huge difference. Whenever I’m having a bad eyebrow day, I don’t feel good, I don’t feel confident. I get them threaded, and if it’s been too long since I’ve gotten them threaded, I use eyebrow wax — but seriously, eyebrows make such a difference. I got mine threaded this morning.
5. Her routine is almost 100 percent fragrance-free
I have eczema and very, very sensitive skin, so I use everything hypoallergenic, no parabens, no scent. The only exception is La Mer — their products have been really good for my super-sensitive skin, even though they have scent. I always try to use really, really natural products. My lotion is from the drugstore, and it's called Vanicream — it's super moisturizing, it's like $15, and it doesn’t have any bad ingredients in it.
6. Coconut oil really is a miracle worker
I love coconut oil. I found out about it about 8 months ago from one of my closest friends and I use it everywhere. It helped clear up my eczema.
7. She doubles up on moisturizer in the winter
When I feel like my skin is too dry, especially during the cold winter months, I put on olive oil after the shower, let it sit there for about 4-5 minutes, and then put lotion on over it.
8. She fights her hair's natural texture
Second-day hair is THE BEST, and in order to get second-day hair texture when I've just washed it, I’ll use a Bumble & Bumble texturizing product to get that little bit of texture. Otherwise my hair is super, super straight.
9. But does her own 'do
I just curl my hair myself. I literally burned myself so many times this morning because I was in such a rush.
10. She's only got one vice
I never go to bed with my makeup on, I don’t drink alcohol, and I don’t smoke, not even weed — but I have the biggest sweet tooth ever, and I heard sugar is really bad for your skin. I don’t do anything to relieve stress except eat sweets, and I eat sweets every single day. I think I have a dairy intolerance, but I love pastries, I love macaroons, I love cupcakes — oh my gosh, thinking about it makes my mouth water — so that’s like my vice. But if I couldn’t eat those things, I’d be stressed, so I’m just like, whatever. Because whenever I’m super stressed, my skin breaks out.
11. She's excited to re-invent her signature cat-eye
I’m excited to try colored eyeliners. They’re kind of out there, and I don’t know if I’d be able to wear them on a daily basis, but maybe for events they'd be cool. Maybe like a pink eyeliner...
