Sea Turtle Masters the Art of Photoboming

by Jamie Kenney

In my 32 years, I have watched a lot of nature documentaries and if those documentaries have taught me one thing, it's that animals are jerks. Sometimes their jerkiness is cruel (like when male lions eat the cubs of deposed pride leaders), sometimes it's just mean (like dolphins beating up other dolphins), and sometimes it's completely good-natured and hilarious, as is the case with this photobombing turtle in the Philippines.

"We were posing for a group photo at Apo Island when this sea turtle surfaced to breathe and photo-bombed!" explains Diovani de Jesus on his blog, adventures ni kulot . The green sea turtle, which is endangered, uses the shallows near the island as a feeding ground. "Just like what my friend Genesis said, this is a reminder that humans and creatures like this gentle pawikan can co-exist." I guess that's true (at the very least, it's true near Apo Island, which is a renowned community managed Marine Protected area), but it also just goes to shows that all creatures love trying to ruin tourists' cherished vacation memories.

So what's the turtle's backstory guys? What's its name? Was it trying to be funny? Mean? Was it trying to befriend the tourists in a really awkward way? The world will never know, but thanks to the beauty of the internet, we can spend forever speculating...

"Okay, now on the count of three let's all jump at the same time!"
