No Uber Cats? Check Out These Books about Cats

by Tara Merrigan

It's National Cat Day, but if you, like us, are still waiting for your Uber Kittens to arrive, you can check out one of these three books featuring cats in honor.

1. The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. A childhood classic for many, this is a tale about two children's misadventures with the Cat in the Hat. If you prefer movies, though, check out the 1957 animated version — not the painful Mike Myers adaptation done in 2003.

2. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Although a cat is not the book's main character as with the previous selection, the Cheshire cat is a prominent, memorable feature of this work's plot. Known for its screwed-up grin, the Cheshire cat's most memorable depiction was probably the pink-and-purple striped creature of the 1951 animated film.

3. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. Better known for "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and "The Wasteland," Eliot also wrote these verse about cats for children. Published in 1930, the collection comprises poems that were originally sent as letters to his godchildren. The book also provided the foundation for the Broadway musical Cats.

If you really want to binge, Goodreads has an entire list of popular books about cats. Knock yourself out.
