'Empire' Teaches Us A Lot About Life

by Kenya Foy

Ah, the land of FOX’s Empire: where families feud ferociously, pop stars go crazy in public, and one insane (but amazing) mother emerges from a lengthy prison sentence to wreak havoc on the already unstable life of her record executive ex-husband. At first glance, the show may sound like a superficial, glamorized hot mess — I mean, Empire doesn't sound a show to derive life lessons from. But, trust me when I say that when it comes to some of the show’s more jaw-dropping plot lines, there’s definitely more to it than meets the eye. C’mon — there’s a reason social media erupts every Wednesday night when the show airs. Even Michelle Obama is a huge Empire fan.

Anyway, If you’ve only managed to witness a fraction of the insanity unfold on Empire, then you already know that the contains plenty of lessons on what not to do in life — namely murder, infidelity, manipulating, and pitting your own flesh and blood against one another. However, there is some to be learned from this show — and despite the fact that some of the show’s characters appear to be rotten to the core (I’m looking at you, Lucious), Empire’s crazy, twisted story lines always offer a hearty life lesson to grab and hold onto long after an episode ends.

Be Fearless

Despite facing the wrath of his homophobic father and possibly taking a hit to his career, Jamal's coming out displayed the advantages of staring fear directly in the face.

Trust Your Instincts

Going with your gut can help you do what's right for you, even when no one else sees your vision.

Fight For What You Believe In

Seriously, it's go hard or go home.

Always Be Professional

Clearly, Porsha needs a little work in this area.

Be Assertive

This applies to you too, Boo Boo Kitty.

Get a Second, Third and Fourth Opinion, If Necessary

Had Lucious not been misdiagnosed with ALS, he might've avoided a whole lot of necessary drama.

Kill 'Em With Kindness

Well, maybe a little kinder... but you get my drift.

Keep Your Enemies Close

On second thought, maybe not that close.
