Gwyn's New Interview is 'VF' Damage Control

by Lindsay Mannering

In a new interview with Red magazine, actress and lifestyle guru Gwyneth Paltow says she doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks about her. The mom of two sat down with the British publication and explained that as she gets older, the fewer amounts of fucks she gives. She just doesn't feel like wasting her energy worrying about what other people say about her — if her husband or close friends had an issue with her, she'd listen, but otherwise, you can take your opinion about her and shove it — Gwynnie don't care.

I respect a lot about what's happening here and totally agree with her that it's a futile exercise to try and please everyone or to concern yourself with what others think. It's way easier said than done, but Gwyn's right: do you. She explains:

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It matters what you think of yourself. And what your children think … So if anyone is going to ask my advice, I'd say, do what is right for you, and don't give a shit what anyone else thinks.

Preach.

I totally feel Gwyneth here, I really do, but I can't help but think this whole "I'm above all the haters" talk isn't somehow coming from a place of self-defense rather than self-preservation. We know that Vanity Fair is set to publish a less than flattering article about the actress, and it just seems like it's a little too convenient for her to speak up about how she doesn't give a shit, when in fact, she allegedly gave so many shits about the negative profile that she sent an email to her A-list friends warning them never do work with the venerable magazine ever again.

Saying you "don't care" after all your failed efforts to silence the haters isn't "not caring." It actually shows you care a lot. Throwing your hands in the air and pretending to be above it all when really, you're upset that all your cares couldn't force a change in others... that still means you give a shit. You give a lot of shits.

It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife, etc.

In her defense, Gwyneth says that those rumors are "just gossip," so who knows if she actually reacted that way or not, but still. It just feels like if she truly didn't care, she wouldn't give an interview telling people how much she doesn't care, unless she cared. This sit-down with Red feels like Vanity Fair damage control and only serves to make us more curious about what will be printed about her in the upcoming profile.

The good news for Gwyn, though, is that when it does come out, she won't care.
