Tom Hardy Loves Dogs More Than You

by Anna Klassen

The star of summer's most intense blockbuster, Tom Hardy, can't stop talking about his favorite four legged creatures. It's been well known known for quite some time that the British actor has an affinity for dogs. He's even adopted pups who've roamed onto the sets of his films. He once did an interview with Vulture where he allegedly said the word "dog" or dogs" 62 times. That's a lot of puppy love. And at the Los Angeles press day for Mad Max: Fury Road , Tom Hardy started talking about dogs again, completely unsolicited.

"John found a dog outside, and we called her Mad Maxine," Hardy says in response to his co-star Charlize Theron talking about her character's name, Furiosa. "Remember that pug we found? The one that kept coming to set?" he asks Theron, adding: "In Namibia."

"You named her Mad Maxine?" she asks.

"John, the security officer, yeah," he says.

Hardy's affection for dogs has been well documented, with Tumblr blogs dedicated to photos of the handsome actor holding puppies. It's not like his passionate feelings for the furry creatures are unique — there are plenty of people who call themselves dog lovers. But just like Ryan Gosling saving a woman from oncoming traffic makes us swoon, so does the thought of Tom Hardy saving adopting a stray puppy. Before I divulge too deeply into what it must be like to be that puppy — to get to nuzzle, and dare I say, lick, Tom Hardy's beautiful face, I am reminded that his animal activism doesn't stop with adopting strays.

In the Vulture interview with 62 utterances of "dog," Hardy says: "I’m the finder of dogs, you know what I mean. My missus, she’s like, “You’re not allowed to bring another dog back from a job.” But I’ll always find one. On every job we go on, I’ll either find someone’s dog and look after it, or I’ll take my own dog, or I find a dog and we home it. I do find dogs. I brought one back from Brooklyn, actually, from this job. I found a dog there. But that’s it. We have two now at home. Can’t have any more for the moment. And actually, they’re a handful, two. But I love dogs. Like, A LOT. They’re my favorite animal. Ever."

While he might not be able to bring any more stray puppies home with him, he is using his voice to support the adoption of homeless canines everywhere.

Hardy recently did a campaign with PETA, who infamously teams up with actors and celebrities for the benefit of animal welfare. Hardy's campaign supported animal adoption, and featured him getting a big 'ol smooch from his adopted dog Woodstock, whom he found on set of filming Lawless in 2011.

While Hardy didn't adopt Maxine, the pug he befriended in Namibia, he is continuing to take strides for the well being of four-legged friends everywhere.

What a lovely day.

Watch a trailer (there's a ton of them, but this is my favorite) for Mad Max: Fury Road below, and catch it in theaters May 15.
