Amtrak Train Crashes In Philadelphia — REPORT

Several people were apparently injured after Amtrak Train 188 derailed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, the local NBC station reported. Around 240 people were on board, officials confirmed, and NBC Philadelphia reporting that at least 50 people have been injured, but the number and extent of injuries have not yet been confirmed. The Associated Press reported that the train was traveling from Washington D.C. to New York City when the eight to 10 train cars derailed on Wheatsheaf Lane in Philadelphia after the train approached a curve. Bustle has reached out to Amtrak for comment. (Update: Seven passengers have now been confirmed dead.)

Paul Cheung, an Associated Press employee, was on the back of the train when it crashed and told the news wire that the front of the train "looks pretty bad." According to ABC 2 Baltimore reporter Jamie Costello, first responders asked news choppers to shine light onto the crash as rescuers searched for passengers who might be trapped among the debris.

Several people who were on board used social media to inform people of the crash, sharing photos and videos. Patrick J. Murphy, a former congressman from Pennsylvania, tweeted, "Im on @Amtrak train that just crashed. Im ok. Helping others. Pray for those injured." An Instagram user with the username YameenAllworld posted a video as passengers urged another to crawl forward.
