8 'Empire' Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

by Marenah Dobin

Empire has gone beyond the realm of a typical television show. It has become a bona fide television phenomenon. If you're not watching Empire, I don't know what you're doing with your life. It's one thing to skip out on watching a popular TV show, but now Empire is at a point where it's dominating all forms of media and conversation. If I didn't watch the show, I would miss out on a lot of references on my Twitter and Instagram feeds. More specifically, there would be so many funny Empire memes that I wouldn't understand.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes you can understand a meme and laugh along without being a fan of the content that inspires it, but that's not always the case. Sometimes there are memes that are beyond hilarious, but you will never be able to understand their relevance in pop culture because you are unfamiliar with the source material. That's why there are some memes that only Empire fans can understand.

If you're scrolling through these memes without laughing, then you are clearly not a fan of the show and that is something you should rectify. But if you are an Empire fan, then check these out because you will definitely laugh out loud.

1. The Cookie Starter Pack

This one is chock full of inside jokes. I laughed for a good minute and a half when I first saw it, but if you've never seen Empire, there's no chance that you would pick up on the humorous Cookie moments that are highlighted in this meme.

2. Sike

There was nothing more shocking than Lucious finding out that he did not actually have ALS. The fans all knew the writers would find some way for it to make sense for Terrence Howard to stay on the show, but I just figured they would delay his symptoms. This reveal was pretty shocking and the Internet went wild with memes related to the plot point.

3. The Hustle & Flow Sequel

I will never get over drawing comparisons between Empire and Hustle & Flow. The show is basically a sequel to the movie. And this meme just cracks me up. Cookie and Lucious really moved on up in the world.

4. Tick, Tock, Tick, Tickety, Tock

I seriously cannot get "Drip Drop" out of my head. And this meme is a perfect play on that song and completely understands my desire for Season 2 of the show.

5. Jamal Gets The Empire

Every fan knew that Jamal deserved to get the record label, but it was still pretty shocking when Lucious decided to hand over his business to his middle son.

6. Obama Waiting For Empire's Return

I would not be shocked if President Obama got really into Empire and started counting down until new episodes while humming Hakeem's song "Drip Drop" in his head. I mean, we already know Michelle's a fan.

7. She Make That Thang Go

You cannot deny that "Drip Drop" is a catchy song. I will always laugh at these lyrics paired with pretty much anything.

8. Well, Obviously

In a messed up way, this cracks me up. I have no idea why, but Lucious is a character that I root for. Even though he's a ruthless business man and murderer, I weirdly feel bad and don't want him to get in trouble over Bunkie's death.

As great as Empire is, its fans are just as creative with their hilarious takes on the plot, and these memes definitely make me excited for what's to come in Season 2.
