10 Things That Cheaters Love (Says Science)

by Kristine Fellizar

There's really no one reason why people cheat on their partners, but infidelity happens in relationships and marriages all over the world — and it's becoming much more common with people under 30. In a 2007 survey conducted by MSNBC.com/iVillage, it was found that one in five adults in monogamous relationships have cheated on their partners, and almost 50 percent admit to being unfaithful at some point in their lives.

Maybe it's a mix of social factors and ego, like financially-dependent spouses are more likely to cheat. Maybe people are just restless and unsatisfied. Either way, there are so many studies out there warning you on the signs of cheaters and how to spot one. Maybe the reasons why people cheat can be explained through science. If you've been keeping track, your ever-growing list of, "Who not to date," must be pretty long, and your dating pool of potential prospects must be very slim. Because as the following list shows, cheaters are just like the rest of us — minus the whole having an affair thing, of course.

Here are 10 websites, drinks, and music that cheaters love, according to surveys and studies, because they obsessed with identifying cheaters too.

1. Cheating Men Wear Clean-Citrus Based Fragrances, While Women Who Cheat Like Bold, Potent Scents

According to a poll conducted by European extramarital dating site, Gleedon, male cheaters cited Yves Saint Laurent’s L’Homme, One Million’s Paco Rabanne, and Chanel’s Bleu as their favorite scents to wear. Women, on the other hand, favored Guerlain’s Shalimar, Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle, and Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire.

2. Twitter

A study found that people who actively use Twitter were more likely to experience online dating conflict in their romantic relationships, which led to cheating, breakups, and divorce.

3. Banana Republic

Ashley Madison, probably the most well-known site for cheating spouses, surveyed 52,390 of its female users and found that Banana Republic was their preferred clothing brand of choice. CEO Noel Biderman cited that the brand’s merchandise perfectly suited the profile of the site’s average female user, which is a “professional woman in her early 30s.”

4. Game Of Thrones

It’s no secret that Game of Thrones is a pretty big deal. Pretty much everyone and their mom watches it. A survey found that Game of Thrones is the most popular show among cheaters followed by Grey’s Anatomy, Sons of Anarchy, and The Walking Dead.

5. Jazz Music

For all that talk about getting wild under a haze of sex, drugs, and booze, heavy metal musicians and the people who love their music, may actually be big softie romantics at heart. A survey found that heavy metal, indie, and rock and roll fans were least likely to commit adultery than fans of jazz, salsa, and pop.

The survey, which was conducted by cheating website, Victoria Milan, asked 6,500 of its members about their tastes in music. It was found that a majority of cheaters don’t think about their partners when they’re listening to their favorite music. Instead, 75 percent of them admitted to thinking about their lovers on the side when listening to their favorite tunes. According to the survey, most cheaters preferred jazz music over anything else at 19 percent, followed by salsa (14 percent), pop (13 percent), country (12 percent), and then rap (9 percent). At the bottom of the list were reggae, rock and roll, electronic, indie, and heavy metal.

Now, of course, these stats don’t necessarily mean that your partner’s a player if they’re constantly humming the likes of Armstrong, Coltrane, and Davis. Nor should you immediately become a groupie for an Iron Maiden tribute band.

6. Guinness

According to Illicit Encounters, a U.K. based dating site for cheaters, most cheating husbands said Guinness was their beer of choice. Corona was the second most popular.

7. Audis

Out of 800,000 Illicit Encounters members surveyed, 22 percent said they drove Audis. The top five car brands cheaters drove include BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, and Volkswagen.

8. Morton’s the Steakhouse

Want to catch your husband cheating? Try stopping by your local Morton’s. Apparently Morton’s the Steakhouse was cited as the number one restaurant where Ashley Madison members took their mistresses to eat.

As Ashley Madison CEO, Noel Biderman said in a press release, “Chain restaurants are larger and less conspicuous. Steak houses are always a popular affair destination since they’re not only dimly lit but also commonly found in business districts, close to hotels where these type of dates typically end.”

Other top restaurant choices include the Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s, and other steakhouses like Ruth’s Chris and Outback.

9. Virgin Airlines

Yes, the irony is not lost on this one. Another Ashley Madison survey found that cheaters preferred to fly Virgin with their lovers, followed by Jet Blue, Delta, Southwest, and American. Out of those surveyed, 76.9 percent have specifically requested window seats, and 7.4 percent have joined the Mile High Club.

10. Vacationing In Miami

Because it’s summer time, people can and will take their affairs to brand new locations. In fact, a survey of cheating New Yorkers found that a majority of them preferred to take a vacation with their affair partners on a beach or island. Miami was ranked the top travel destination followed by the Hamptons, the Bahamas, Martha’s Vineyard, and Vegas.
