Nicole Kidman Movies You Need To See ASAP

by Jennifer Still

Nicole Kidman is a phenomenal actress, with a Hollywood career spanning more than 30 years. She's appeared in over 70 TV shows and movies, acted as producer on five projects, and is basically an all around badass and I feel like she doesn't get enough credit for it. Sure, she's won critical acclaim for several of her roles, but when most of us think of Nicole Kidman movies, we're probably going to name the same handful. It's criminal, I tell you — especially since she's made so many great ones that are terribly underrated. Something must be done to put things right!

One thing I really love about Kidman's choice in roles is that they're all so different. She's played every type of character, from a cabaret actress, to a high tech perfect wife, to Virginia Woolf, for goodness' sake. She's extremely adaptable, which is something every actress should be but very few ever truly accomplish, and we need to be paying attention to some of the films she's done that maybe haven't had the biggest budgets or received the most press, but are still quality in every way. Thankfully, with the likes of Netflix and cheap Amazon DVDs, you can sort through her back catalogue at your leisure, and these are the movies you should start with.

Practical Magic (1998)

Chances are, you've probably seen Practical Magic before, but did you really and truly appreciate it? Probably not. Kidman and Sandra Bullock play sisters who happen to be magical and want to use that magic to find true love. It's such a classic, and I love it.

Malice (1993)

Nicole and Alec Baldwin are a couple who can't wait to have children, until Kidman's character is operated on by an insane doctor and things get really creepy really quickly. If you like messed up thrillers, you're in luck. Get this one on ASAP.

Rabbit Hole (2010)

I have to admit, this one's a bit depressing. A couple deals with the loss of their young son, Danny, when he's killed in a car accident. The relationship between the couple becomes more strained and dysfunctional in the aftermath of Danny's death and there's some great acting going on in this one.

Birth (2004)

Okay, I know I'm picking all the weird ones here, and this is probably the weirdest of the bunch. A 10-year-old boy tries to convince a woman that he happens to be her recently deceased husband reincarnated in child form. What transpires is pretty heavy, but I recommend it.

Margot at the Wedding (2007)

Family secrets come to the forefront when Margot (Kidman) visits her sister Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh) after finding out that Pauline is getting married to a guy Margot doesn't approve of. All hell breaks loose, and the drama is so delicious.

Before I Go To Sleep (2014)

Ugh, this is such a good one. Kidman plays a woman who wakes up every day with no memory of the day that came before, and she keeps reliving the same day over and over again. There's a mystery that needs to be uncovered, but getting to the truth of what she's been through is easier said than done.

The Others (2001)

Nicole Kidman in a horror movie? Yes, please! The kids are photosensitive and the house might be haunted, but that just makes it even more fun.
