How to Get Jun Ji Hyun's Makeup Look

by Rosie Narasaki

If you have had the good fortune to have watched My Love from Another Star, chances are you've gazed longingly at Jun Ji Hyun's impeccable makeup. She's kind of perfect in the way that someone like Grace Kelly is perfect — you know, in that otherworldly, completely impossible to achieve kind of way... but that doesn't mean we can't try. Besides, Jun's makeup as Cheon Song Yi is surprisingly simple and wearable — it's a great way to look polished without looking too done, and as a bonus, it fits in nicely with the whole neon trend that's currently making the rounds.

Song Yi wears a number of different makeup looks throughout the drama, but there's no denying the fact that she has a definite signature look. Most of the time (even if she's crying in her pajamas, stumbling to the ER in high heels, or just waking up), she paired peach eyeshadow with a touch of liquid liner, and a healthy dollop of neon pink lipstick. I'd describe it as a fun, natural-with-a-kick look — and if you're tired of smoky eyes and attention-grabbing eyeliner, this might be the perfect new makeup for you to rock all summer.

Kind of perfect, right? I love the way the soft peach shadow counters the bright pink lippie — so, let's take a crack at it!

The Base

  • Foundation: First off, you're going to want to start with a dewy canvas. My favorite product for the situation is IOPE Air Cushion BB — it's easy to apply, has built in SPF, and imparts a nice glow to my skin while still covering up (most) of my acne scars, etc. If you're into the whole cushion thing, I've heard that Hera's BB Cushion is even better than IOPE's — and it is Jun Ji Hyun's brand of choice.
  • Eyebrows: Song Yi wears her eyebrows on the delicate side — she's rocking a bit of the famous Korean straight brows, but they also have a defined arch. Go for a natural look, and you should be good.
  • Blush: Even if you squint at a lot of close-up screenshots, it's tough to discern any blush on Song Yi's immaculate face. That said, if you're like me, and you feel a little on the White Walker-y side without your dose of cheek color, go ahead and add a touch — just make sure it's something sheer and on the more neutral side (think of it almost more as a highlighter). I found that Benefit Blush in Dandelion is absolutely perfect for the job, but blush really comes down to personal preference.

The Eyeshadow

Next to the neon lips, the eyeshadow's probably the most important part of the look. Song Yi's trademark color lies somewhere between a peach and a warm brown (I used Aritaum Mono Eyes in Cashmere). Apply all over the mobile lid up to slightly above your crease line, and blend like crazy.

To add a touch more definition to my eyes, I added just a tiny bit of brown eyeshadow (the darkest shade of the Wet 'n Wild eyeshadow trio in Sweet as Candy) along the entire length of my upper lashline, as well as the outer corners of my lower lashline. I applied the color using a blending brush, to keep things looking natural (plus, you want to make sure the peach shade is the main attraction).

The Eyeliner

Basically, the key to the liner is to draw as thin a line as possible — a precision liquid liner (like Kat Von D's Tattoo Liner) is probably the best tool for the job, but as my eyeliner collection's a bit anemic at the moment, I did the best I could with my Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Liner and an angled brush. You'll also want to waterline (either with dark brown or black) for just a smidge more oomph.

Oh, and I almost forgot — mascara's optional for this look (scandalous, I know). If you do decide to add some volume/length to your lashes, stick to one or two coats, because outside of her red carpet events, Song Yi's surprisingly not someone who goes for a lot of lash dramarama (fab as it may be).

The Lips

Here's where you really get to have your fun. With the rest of the look so low-key and natural, it's time to fire on all cylinders, pigment-wise. Even though Song Yi prefers eye-searing neon shades for the lips most of the time, she still wears the colors sheered out, which gives a nice soft-focus feel to the ultra-bright look.

To achieve this effect, I blended in my brightest bright pink lipstick (Maybelline Vivids in Vivid Rose) into my lips with my index finger. Then, to get that translucent feeling, I added a touch of sheer coral gloss (to really bring out the brightness of the pink), and blended once again with my fingers. And voila — there you have it! Now all you need is for your alien Prince Charming to come along and sweep you off your feet.
