Tanning Bed Usage On The Decline For Women

by Lauren Turner

Since summer is now a thing, everyone is dreaming of that perfect, golden tan. But according to a recent study, women's tanning bed usage has declined. Yet, that doesn't necessarily mean the urge to glow has gone away. With the ever-growing dangers of indoor tanning increasing, women are (finally) recognizing how seriously bad it is for their skin.

The latest report was released by JAMA Dermatology and announced that the overall rates of tanning bed usage has gone down by 1.3 percent, between 2010 and 2013. The study even took it a step further and recognized that the change in younger women's rates of indoor tanning use have been the greatest. For women 18 to 29, the rates have gone from 11.3 percent in 2010, to 8.6 percent in 2013.

I'm not going to lie, I've been in a tanning bed twice in my life. And I know what you're thinking: Why would a brown person tan? But honestly, I needed to know what the hype was about, and even after the experience, I don't get it. It's hot and crazy bright and you're like stuck in a little cave thing for 30 plus minutes. Yes, I can say that tanning is great for darkening stretch marks, but I'd rather just lay out in the sun, with sunscreen that is. And I guess a lot of other women have come to that conclusion, too.
