'The End of the Tour' Stars Got Cozy

by Anna Klassen

One of my favorite films of 2015 so far is James Ponsoldt's brilliantly devised The End of the Tour , starring Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg. The film follows the true story of Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky’s five-day interview with acclaimed writer David Foster Wallace, as the pair develop a unique and often tenuous relationship over the course of the last days of DFW's book tour for Infinite Jest. It is a meaty and entirely enthralling look into the relationship between journalist and subject.

At Sundance Film Festival, where audiences fist got a glimpse of this powerful film, director Ponsoldt told me: "I felt like I had to make it," he said. "It started with the screenplay written by Donald Margulies who was a playwriting professor of mine in college. He had adapted David Lipsky's book which I was a huge fan of. Once Donald sent me the script and told me Anonymous Content was producing it, it was all there on the page, and I couldn't stop thinking about it."

And once wide audiences are able to see the film, I doubt they'll be able to stop thinking about it — or the film's enigmatic subject — either.

I had the opportunity to sit down with the two actors and discuss the film, their thoughts on the late, great writer, and how they stayed warm on set. Watch the full interview below. The End of the Tour hits theaters July 31.
