Though viewers are already familiar with the character, Netflix’s Wednesday adds a whole new dimension to the iconic Addams Family daughter. The series — described as a “sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery” — charts Wednesday Addams’ (Jenna Ortega) years as a student at Nevermore Academy. There, she “attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.”

Netflix didn’t immediately renew Wednesday for a second season, but co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were already prepared to continue the story. “Miles and I are talking amongst ourselves about it,” Gough added in a separate Empire interview, per Screen Rant. “There's definitely more that you can explore in the world of the Addamses.”

Fortunately, on Jan. 6, Netflix confirmed that Wednesday Season 2 is, indeed, on the way — with a teaser featuring a voiceover from Ortega as Wednesday and Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary,” which has been used in the Wednesday Addams TikTok dance trend. “Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet,” Wednesday says in the clip. “It’s been pure torture. Thank you.”

One promising early sign of the show’s Season 1 record-setting viewership was that it didn’t take much convincing to get director Tim Burton on board, from the beginning. “When I read this [script], it just spoke to me about how I felt in school and how you feel about your parents, how you feel as a person,” he explained to Empire in September 2022. “It gave the Addams Family a different kind of reality. It was an interesting combination.”

The Wednesday Season 2 Cast

In addition to Ortega, the Wednesday Season 1 cast included: Christina Ricci (Marilyn Thornhill), Gwendoline Christie (Principal Larissa Weems), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair), Percy Hynes White (Xavier Thorpe), Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Jamie McShane (Sheriff Galpin), Naomi J Ogawa (Yoko Tanaka), Moosa Mostafa (Eugene Ottinger), Georgie Farmer (Ajax Petropolus), and Riki Lindhome (Dr. Valerie Kinbott). Wednesday’s family is played by Victor Dorobantu (Thing), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams), Luis Guzmán (Gomez Addams), Fred Armisen (Uncle Fester), and Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley Addams).

Following the renewal news, Ortega revealed that she wants Lady Gaga to guest star on Wednesday Season 2. “If Lady Gaga were to be a part, [she and Wednesday] would have to be two monsters that understand each other,” she told Variety on the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet. “I’m sure Netflix would love that.”

Though a potential Gaga cameo remains up in the air, fans can look forward to meeting a new Addams family member in the second season. Though the cast confirmed the news in a video for Netflix's Tudum fan event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on June 17, Doohan added, “But we don’t know who it is!” However, Ortega hinted that she would “love to see Cousin Itt” drop by.

Prior to the actor signing on to play Wednesday, Millar said he agreed with Gough and director Tim Burton that there would be “no show” if they didn’t find the right actor to fill the titular role. “The search for Wednesday was our primary focus for months and we saw hundreds of actresses. Even though Jenna was on our radar almost immediately, we really wanted to do a deep dive,” he recently explained to GoldDerby. After a “magic” Zoom audition, they immediately called Burton and told him they’d found their star. “She just possessed the role,” Millar added. “She was not only visually perfect, but she had the right attitude, the right intelligence.”

The Wednesday Season 2 Plot

In Tudum’s June 2023 Wednesday cast video, Myers revealed that the second season is “being worked on right now and the storyline is so top secret even we don't know what’s going to happen.” However, Ortega offered some light Season 2 spoilers during a conversation with Elle Fanning for Variety’s Actors on Actors series. “It’s still coming together, but we’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more,” Ortega, who’s also taking on a producer role, teased in the June feature. “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”

As viewers saw in the inaugural season’s finale, the Hyde is very much still in the picture, and there also might be a stalker at Nevermore, based on the creepy texts and photos Wednesday received from an unknown number. “[The stalker proves] that threats remain out there… to both Wednesday and the school,” Millar explained to Tudum. “Not all not loose ends have been tied up neatly as she thinks they have.”

The Wednesday Season 2 Fan Theories

At Tudum, the Wednesday cast also reacted to several Wednesday Season 2 fan theories, including that Eugene might have picked up the slain Crackstone’s ring and could even inherit the villain’s powers. “I do think he would want to claim some sort of vengeance on anybody who’s ever bullied him,” Ortega said.

As for the idea that Wednesday might be the new Hyde Master and have some sort of control over Tyler now, she joked, “I’ve always thought it would be really, really interesting if Wednesday had a monster as a pet.” Doohan, for his part, chimed in that he’d “bow down to Jenna,” though admitting, “Wednesday would probably come up with something horrible for me to do.”

Doohan also weighed in that a theory that Weems is alive and took on the form of Lurch in the Season 1 finale “makes sense,” evidenced by a seemingly changed eye color.

The Wednesday Season 2 Premiere Date

Wednesday’s first outing reportedly began production in September 2021 and wrapped filming in Bucharest, Romania, in March 2022 — add in post-production, and it seems that a premiere anytime before 2024 would be pretty unlikely. At least we know more Wednesday is on the way, though — even if it takes a while.

This post will be updated as more Wednesday Season 2 details become available.
