Empowering YA Heroines To Inspire You In 2017

by Kerri Jarema

If you need a little extra motivation to be your best, fiercest, most kick ass self this year, look no further than these young adult fantasy heroines. We all have our current favorites: Hermione Granger, Celaena Sardothien, Kestrel Trajan... the list could go on and on. We love these characters because they're not only smart, strong, and brave, but they are women warriors, taking often horrible and terrifying circumstances and changing their worlds. And while we're lucky enough to have several sequels coming this year from fantasy authors with incredibly kick ass heroines, we're possibly even more excited by the prospect of all the new releases that are slated for 2017.

We've scoured our TBR piles for the fantasy books of the year with the most awesome female main characters and chosen 11 of the most-anticipated releases. We've got everything from matchmakers to pirates, princesses to queens, soldiers to explorers. All of these women come from totally different worlds and their stories start in totally different places, but there is one crucial thing they all have in common: They fight for what they want and they don't let anything stand in their way — not war, not magic, not curses, not kidnapping, nor anything else that's thrown at them. If you could use a little shot of femme ferocity in your life, you're definitely going to want to add these books to your list.
