7 Reasons To Be Happy Your Parents Are Having Sex

by Emma McGowan

Parents having sex. The mere thought of it is enough to make even the most sex-positive sexually active full-grown adult cringe — even those of us who are parents ourselves. None of us like to think about our parents having sex because, well, they’re our parents. But if you can think about it objectively, without any of the potentially trauma-inducing images that may accompany such thoughts, you’ll probably realize that there are a lot of reasons you should hope that your parents are still doing it.

“Yes, it is a bit yucky to imagine mom and dad ‘doing it.’” Dr. Gary Brown, PhD, LMFT, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, tells Bustle. “Just remember, they didn't have to give up their sexuality when they became your parents!”

I’m going to piggyback on that with a reminder that if you ever plan on having kids (or if you have them already) and you end up with those kids’ other parent for the long-haul, don’t you hope you’re still doing it way into old age? I certainly do. With that in mind, here are seven reasons you should hope your parents are still having sex.

1. Your Parents Are Happy

“Feel kind of weird at the thought of your parents still having sex?" Licensed clinical psychotherapist Dr. LeslieBeth Wish tells Bustle. “Take a breath, shake off that reaction and be very, very happy that your parents are happy! Studies show that mutually happy, long-term marriages report that sexual passion is important — and still alive and well!”

2. They Have A Strong Bond

“In the brain, shared sexual satisfaction — most especially over time — creates in the couple strong bonds, good health, and a continually renewed sense of trust, love, joy, and acceptance,” Dr. LeslieBeth says.

3. It Gives You A Great Model

“Your parents' happiness promotes ease and better understanding of you, and it gives you a great role model for long-term intimate relationships,” Dr. LeslieBeth says.

4. Sex Is Part Of A Healthy Marriage

"It’s good modeling for you to see that sexual vitality is a healthy part of marriage," Dr. Wyatt Fisher, licensed clinical psychologist, tells Bustle. "A thriving sex life usually means the couple is happy and that should make you happy for them."

5. It’s A Sign Their Marriage Is Doing Well

“Assuming that mom and dad are both enjoying the experience, this can be one of several good prognostic sign that their marriage seems to be in good shape,” Dr. Brown says. “Be happy for them!”

6. It's A Good Life Lesson If You Want To Get Married

"It provides a valuable lesson for you in fidelity and the importance of nurturing one’s marriage," Dr. Fisher says.

7. It's A Reminder That You Don't Have To Be Young And "Hot" To Have Sex

“Oh — and it shows you that you don't have to be gorgeous, handsome and in 'perfect' shape to sustain love!” Dr. LeslieBeth says.
