Alternative Facts Jokes Make Fun Of This Statement

It seems like there's a new name in town for false statements from the Trump administration. After White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer called Friday's inauguration crowd "the largest ever," Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway explained Spicer's words were "alternative facts." Conway appeared on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday morning, and the "alternative facts" memes and jokes have circulated on social media since her segment.

Spicer's comments came on Saturday from the White House press briefing room. "Some members of the media were engaged in deliberately false reporting," he said. "This was the largest audience to ever witness the inauguration period both in person and around the globe." His statement, which was false, set off a round of memes all its own.

In reality, Spicer's and Conway's words are just some of the troubling signs that have come from the White House since Friday's inauguration. In addition to what they've said, several pages have reportedly been removed from the White House website, including a page on LGBTQ rights and a page on climate change. On Saturday, President Trump declared that he has a "running war with the media." Taken together, these instances send a worrisome message about what may lie ahead in Trump's presidency. However, if there's any comedic relief to be found, it's the public's joking response on social media.

Don't try this at home! If this doesn't demonstrate how absurd "alternative facts" are, then I don't know what does.

Jokes aside, perhaps the most troubling part of Conway's Meet the Press interview on Sunday was what she said when challenged by host Chuck Todd. "If we're going to keep referring to the press secretary in those types of terms I think we're going to have to rethink our relationship here," she said when Todd asked about Spicer's false comments. Conway's remarks give Trump's "war with the media" a whole new importance.
