This honor is awarded to "to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors," according to the official White House description. On Nov. 22, 2016, the Presidential Medal of Freedom was presented to 21 people, ranging from Ellen DeGeneres to Michael Jordan to Bill and Melinda Gates.

"It's a reflection of the extent and generosity of [Obama's] spirit," Biden said, holding back tears, after President Obama presented the award to him. "I don't deserve this, but I know it comes from the President's heart."

The exchange was understandably emotional, as Biden and Obama prepare to leave the White House and their eight-year relationship. "I had no inkling,” Biden said, wearing the medal. “I thought we were going …to toast one another and say what an incredible journey it has been.”
