You Can Win $1000 Worth Of Free Books By Tagging An Indie Bookstore On Social Media

by Kerri Jarema

'Tis the season of giving, and readers want nothing more than to be given a whole boatload of books. And it looks like The American Bookseller Association and Penguin Random House know that all too well, because they've teamed up this November to offer readers and indie bookstore lovers a chance to win $1000 worth of books just by sharing the bookish love on social media.

Through November 26, AMA and Penguin are partnering up for the special giveaway in celebration of Indies First on Small Business Saturday this November 25. Twitter and Instagram users who tag a U.S. independent bookstore and use the hashtag #shopindiesfirstsweepstakes will be entered to win $1000 worth of books from Penguin Random House. A random drawing will be held in mid-December to select five grand prize winners, who will each receive $1000 worth of books.

In addition, the independent bookstores named in the winning posts will each receive $1,000 worth of books to be donated to a local nonprofit. You can check out the the complete sweepstakes rules here.

Indies First brings together authors, readers, and publishers in support of independent bookstores. Authors (including this year's Indies First spokesperson, beloved YA and middle grade author Jason Reynolds) and local celebrities volunteer at events across the country, and publishers offer special terms on books and exclusives. It's a fun way to get to know the people that run your own local shop, check out the stock and meet some of your favorite authors and bookish people, all on one day. Plus, it will get you out of the frantic malls and overstuffed big box stores that are desperate to lure you in all Thanksgiving weekend.

Bookstores, and in particular independently owned and run bookshops, are more important now than ever. These local indie bookstores and their booksellers are vital parts of their communities, often carrying specialized stock with the knowledge to match, running cool events and panels you won't see anywhere else, and just generally being a huge facet in keeping their communities alive, thriving, and reading lots of great books.

And if you needed an insentive to shop small this November 25, $1000 worth of books is a pretty good one. Make sure your phone is fully charged and strt heading out to all of your favorite local bookshops now...and make sure to share your trip on social media. And you can start planning your Small Business Saturday itinerary by checking out Indies First events near you on Indie Bound.
