Twitter Is Living For Lily Tomlin & Jane Fonda Going Off On Trump At The Emmys

Since all three of the beloved film 9 to 5's leading ladies were nominated this year, the 2017 Emmys took the opportunity of staging a movie reunion. Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda took the stage together to a standing ovation, and their response only got warmer when Tomlin and Fonda's Donald Trump jokes hit hard. These women did not come to play, and Twitter was all about their glorious takedown of the president tied to the glorious feminism of the movie they were celebrating.

The movie 9 To 5 is about a group of professional women tired with being mistreated, objectified, and overlooked by their monstrously sexist boss. They give that boss (played by Dabney Coleman) a taste of his own medicine, and eventually overthrow him and gain rightful control of the company. It's a feminist revenge fantasy of the highest order, and the actors rightfully assumed that many women (and men, too) are having similar fantasies right now.

"Back in 1980 in that movie, we refused to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying hypocritical bigot," Fonda began. "And in 2017, we still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot," Tomlin added, to whoops and applause. "That being said," Fonda finished, "tonight we're here to recognize some men who conduct themselves with the utmost integrity." And then the trio proceeded to present the Best Supporting Actor In A Drama award to Alexander Skarsgård for his role in Big Little Lies.

Though the ladies didn't have to actually name the president, Twitter definitely picked up what the Grace & Frankie actors were putting down. Here are some of the best responses:

Some Were Calling This The Rewind Moment Of The Night

Some iconic women speaking some iconic truths.

Some Appreciated The Camera Work

Sarandon endorsed Jill Stein for president instead of Hillary Clinton, which didn't go down well with a lot of fans or her colleagues in the industry.

Some Noted That Dolly Parton Didn't Get In On That Part Of The Show...

Tomlin and Fonda are more well known for being politically outspoken than the singer (who was nominated for her TV movie, Dolly Parton’s Christmas Of Many Colors: Circle Of Love), but her silence was definitely going to be remarked upon.

...But Clearly, Nothing Was Going To Stop Them From Speaking Their Truth

When you've got a stage like the Emmys, why hold back?

Some Prefer This Version Of Reality

Once you watch two badass, legendary Hollywood women drag the president, pop culture has reached its pinnacle.

Some Can't Wait For Trump's Eventual Twitter Rant

Instead of tweeting, Donald Trump, why not just rewatch 9 To 5? It's a great film! Or like, do some work.

Some Liked How These Jokes Complemented Dolly Parton's Grace And Frankie Reference

She wants one of those vibrators Tomlin and Fonda's characters are selling on the Netflix comedy. Host Stephen Colbert wasted no time into folding that into his patter when the show came back from the next commercial break.

Some Had Their Wigs Completely Snatched

Sorry, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda own you now. That's just how it goes. And you're lucky they do.

For Some, It Was Just One More Reason To Love These Ladies

As if their long and varied careers and their political activism weren't enough, Fonda and Tomlin got in a perfectly on-theme burn.

It's a given that not everyone watching was happy to see Tomlin and Fonda go in on Trump like they did, but so many of their fans were delighted by not only the awesomely nostalgic reunion but their scathing and very necessary call-out.
