Ruth Negga's 2017 Oscars Dress Is A Vision In Red

There's a reason Ruth Negga was picked to play a queen in 2016's Warcraft: She's a queen IRL. This year, the Oscars are recognizing — Negga's up for Best Actress for the period piece Loving. Naturally, Negga's 2017 Oscars gown was fit for royalty.

Loving tells the story of the Loving v. Virginia case, which in 1967 invalidated laws against interracial marriages. Negga plays the fictional counterpart of real-life plaintiff Mildred Loving, a woman of Rappahannock, Cherokee, and African American descent.

Negga, who is Ethiopian and grew up in Ireland, told PEOPLE she was "struck" by the Lovings couple. "Individually, but also their love for each other just seemed such a beautiful, delicate, rare thing. I felt such outrage on their behalf, like many others, that the simple act of wanting to be married to another human being would incur the wrath of the law and also make people really angry. So angry — violently angry. I was just so shocked by that."

Fans knew to expect a gorgeous look from Negga, who rocked the Golden Globes this year in an incredible front-zipped lic gown.

Her gorgeous long-sleeved crimson Valentino gown — a dangerous move pairing red with the red carpet, but Negga completely rocks it —is set off by an actual IRL tiara and, yep, that's an ACLU ribbon pinned to her chest.
