The last five weeks of Donald Trump's presidency have been some of the most stressful and concerning in American history. Between the myriad resignations of White House senior staff and the out of control, tweet happy commander-in-chief, there's a lot of reason to want regime change in Washington.
The good news is that there's a real potential for change to happen through impeachment. Here are the seven best reasons that Trump could be impeached, which would be a huge relief for millions of Americans.
If you're an anti-Trumper, it may seem like the case for impeachment is already closed, but the legal process is pretty vague right now. Under Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution, a president can be impeached "for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Since there have only been two presidential impeachment cases in the history of the country (for Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton), there's a lot of legal wiggle room for proving those standards. I'll leave the specific legal arguments up to the constitutional experts, but there are a few news stories about Trump that may provide a starting point for the impeachment case. Here are the seven biggest reasons why Trump might be impeached.
His Contact With The Russian Government
Nothing's been proven conclusively enough yet to qualify for impeachment, but if it is shown that Trump helped Russia influence the presidential election, that will definitely qualify.
His Financial Profiting Off Of The Presidency
Trump doubled the price of his Mar-a-Lago Club after the election, which should be illegal, even if it's not.
His Intentional Executive Overreach
Trump's Muslim travel ban showed exactly how little regard he has for the Constitution, and he already seems like he's on the path to violating it even further. He needs to be stopped before that happens.
His Irresponsible Management Of The Federal Bureaucracy
Trump's appointments of unprecedentedly unqualified candidates to lead the federal government sure seems like it would qualify as treason.
His Misuse Of Federal Funds For Private Purposes
Trump's incessant trips to Mar-a-Lago have already cost the taxpayers an estimated $10 million, which is just a huge jump from the last administration. It seems like this may qualify for mismanagement of federal funding, which also may be grounds for impeachment.
His Unconstitutional And Discriminatory Policies
Trump's repeatedly introduced policies that would be discriminatory towards American citizens and legal residents, such as his travel ban and proposed separation of undocumented families.
His Constant Attacks On Governmental Legitimacy
Trump obviously has the right to free speech, but there's a difference between free speech and intentionally undermining the legitimacy of the American government. He's baselessly accused dozens of lawmakers with corruption, and that just shouldn't be allowed by someone who is supposed to lead the government.
Trump is making a mockery of the American democracy, and he's got to go before he unravels the whole thing. At this point, impeachment is the best way to maintain the health of the nation, so someone please bring a case to court soon. Please.
