‘The Good Place’ Fall Hiatus Is Going To Be Too Forking Long

As much as our heroes Eleanor, Tahani, Chidi and Jason desperately want to figure out their ethical dilemmas on The Good Place, audiences are not ready for their adventures in the afterlife to end. The comedy wraps up the first half of Season 2 with its fall finale on Nov. 2, and fans will be waiting on the edges of their seats to find out when The Good Place Season 2 will be back.

Unfortunately there's not a solid answer, as IMDB only lists "2018" as the date for new episodes, but it does indicate that there will be five more episodes this season when the show does return. NBC also has yet to announce the show's winter/spring premiere date, but it's sure to be highly anticipated.

The second season has a 100 percent "certified fresh" critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes — a coveted status — and an 85 percent positive viewer rating. Vulture said that this season of The Good Place "solidifies its status as the most intellectually engaging comedy on television" while still managing to include plenty silly puns and outrageous jokes. Even The New York Times sang the season's praises, saying that "it's still able to surprise, while staying rooted in ideas that make it more than the sum of its twists."

With reviews as good as these, and creator Michael Schur at the helm — one of the masterminds behind monster hits like The Office, Parks & Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine — The Good Place seems like it's solidifying its spot as a modern comedy classic. Star Kristen Bell told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that she'd already been given pitches for a third season, showing that the writers are preparing for a renewal. "It is crazy," she told the publication. "I just kept asking, 'How are you even going to show that? How did you think of that?' I'm so impressed with our writers room."

Schur told Vulture that though he's excited people enjoyed the huge twist that came at the end of the first season, it now puts the show in a position where people are expecting even more clever turns, but Schur is up to the challenge. "You don’t want to suddenly make it a totally different show, but at the same time, part of the reason why they liked it is that they didn’t know it was going to happen," he said. "If you play right into their hands and do another big twist, that might be the least shocking thing you could do." Schur seems to have an idea of where he wants to go in the rest of the second season and beyond. "There’s that phrase that I constantly quote and yet still don’t know the source of, which is, 'The best surprises seem both unexpected and also inevitable,'" he told the website.

The Good Place has taken a completely unique and complex story and made it digestible for absolutely every kind of audience. If you want to take notes on all the clues and philosophical references that hint at the many twists and turns the show takes — of which there are many — you can definitely do that. But also, if you just want to sit back and watch the mayhem unfold in front of you, that option is also available. It's rare to see a half-hour network comedy employ so many mysteries and red herrings within its plot, and The Good Place pulls it off without feeling overwhelming or forced.

It's rare that a comedy has audiences piecing together clues and plot theories. And when The Good Place Season 2 returns, the hunt for hints will definitely continue.
