Labor Day is coming up quick, so it’s just about time to start planning that end-of-summer BBQ. But, when is Labor Day 2017, exactly? This year, the holiday will be falling on Monday, Sept. 4, so you still have some time to make plans and soak up those final sunny days of the season.

For many, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of the transition to the crisp, cool days of fall. It’s a great chance to head outdoors and enjoy the weather before the temperatures start to fall. But what many may not know is that Labor Day actually has a pretty interesting history.

As its name implies, Labor Day — which always falls on the first Monday of September — celebrates labor. Meant to honor the achievements of American workers, the annual holiday was established in the late 1800s, with the first ever Labor Day celebrated in 1882.

The event, now considered a public holiday, has continued for well over a century, allowing the majority of workers from all kinds of occupations to take the day off and end the summer with a bang.

So now that you know where the holiday stems from, what are you waiting for? Mark your calendars, send out those invites, and get ready to break out the burgers for one last summer party!
